  • i think that 2k a year miles is a rather ambitious low mileage estimate for the year.

    think about your travel habbits.

back and forth family back and forth school back going on a road trip holiday travel whilst on holiday the trip back unforseen trips to and from GP hospital shopping christmas run rounds. i did 600 miles just running up from november to december for christmas shopping, and then theres the school run ontop. and i dont travel that far in my car it seems the odd runs here and there tally up more than just a holiday run of 300 miles eachway per year.

6 years old, I wouldnt be spending more than £2000.

At the low yearly mileage a very high mileage petrol car will last you many years. With basic servicing.

But thinking about it 2500 miles a year do you really need a car?

Hire one when the need arises, Or spend a lot less on one?

The OP can have my 2001 Mondeo with 123K miles for £2000 and never worry about a thing going wrong. It should last around 20 years at the said mileage, and only need a cambelt replacing in its final year.

Thanks everyone, I am looking at older cars now. Sorry, my posts seem out of sync. I am very confused.

Exactly what I wanted to know. What's the max £ I should spend for a car very reliable

All joking aside, you do not need to spend around £5K to get a reliable car. The old Mondeo cost £2350 back in 2005 and had FSH and 27K miles. It is still on its original clutch and battery, and has had the following parts replaced:
    4 sets of tyres
    2 CV joints
    2 cambelts/water pumps
    1 exhaust system/cat
6 droplinks (our roads knock these little fellows out very quickly)
    2 front shock absorbers
    2 front discs & 3 sets pads
    1 thermostat housing
    1 set spark plugs
The only time it has let me down, is when a CV joint failed, and that was my fault for ignoring the warning signs.

We both take the train to London for work. Our little one goes to day care that's 10 min walk away. So we are not likely to touch the car on weekdays.

The reason why we actually need a car is:
    1. Getting weekly grocery on a buggy is such a pain.
    2. Taking the kid to swimming lessons/ dance lessons would be much more convenient with a car
3 We love to travel.though having a 4 yr old restricts our trips, we'd like to travel to beaches and parks etc atleast once a month without having to spend a lot on rail tickets . A lot of good places (like longleat ) much more convenient with a car.

And how much did these repairs cost - incl parts and labour?

I bought a 2001 2L petrol MK3 Mondeo for £2300 Sold it just over 4 years later with over 150,000 miles and still running well. Just under £1000.
Had basic servicing, 1 set of brakes all round and 1 set of tyres. Nothing else.

In 2009 i bought a 2004 MK Mondeo diesel estate for £2350, Basic servicing and rear brakes and 2 tyres so far.

    Needs a back box tomorrow.

Cheap motoring, No cambelts on MK3 mondeos. All chain driven. The petro engines are more reliable and cheaper to fix compared to diesels.

bluedrop all of andy's list are fairly standard wear and tear items on a car - any car.

    cars cost money.
  • First I'll look about the average, speed, and balancing of the car, In these i'll choose to Hyundai i10.
