Cheap train tickets?
Hi Guys,
Im new to this so please be kind. In November I am planning a trip to Dover with my wife Claire. Only problem is we live at the moment in Dawlish Warren, South West Devon so travel is quite far.
I am disabled so got a disabled train pass for £20 but a return ticket at todays rates i went as far as the calendar would take me which is September and its going to cost around £114 to travel and i have shopped around but can't find it cheaper elsewhere, Thats why I am hoping you can all put your heads together and see what you can come up with as the Guest House is just under £400 for the week which is quite cheap.
As my family roots lie there I am desperate to go and visit all the old sites of Dover and trace my family roots but as I am on benefits because i have a mental illness money is a problem. Hope you can all help its been something I have wanted to do for years and now i feel the time is right to do it. Thankyou in advance Paul

Hi Paul,
Do you have to travel at the weekend as you've booked to stay somewhere or can you be flexible with days and times of travel?0 -

Hellodo you have any tesco clubcard vouchers at all? you can swap them for twice their value in tesco rewards for use at red spotted hankey.com
i have done this a few times and it can really cut the cost of a trip, another thing to try is go to your local ticket office and ask what the cheapest fare is that day, they often involve a few switches unfortunately so this may not be practical for you but may be worth a try, also does traveling later in the day make a difference in cost? as i know when you go to London traveling certain times is far more expensive than others.

Don't forget that your Disabled Persons Railcard covers two adults travelling together so you both get the discount. If you can't find tickets online it might be worth a trip to the booking office in Dawlish. They often have local knowledge of things that might not be obvious on some of the websites regarding rover tickets which may be valid for part of your journey or any special promotions.Debt free since 18/11/2011

Have you tried using the Tickety Split app? There's a thread here about it, you should be able to save a few pounds by using it, it helps you find the correct station to split your journey at, no need to get off the train.

Some clerks at the ticket office or station travel centre are very helpful and will help you find the cheapest fare by splitting tickets, if you can go in at a quiet time they should be able to advise you.
Hope you and your wife have a fantastic time in Dover0 -
OP, consider Advance Singles from Dawlish Warren to London Waterloo, via Honiton. They are not yet available for your dates and the Olympics have made it difficult to try looking earlier.
I have checked, and travelling midweek in mid July using Advance Singles would cost £64.80 to Waterloo.
A very short walk to Waterloo East will see you on a direct train to Dover. An Off Peak Return from Waterloo East to Dover is £41.30.
A good thing about that route that you do not have to use the tube, although it does take longer than into paddington.
So total could be £105.90.
That is the total return cost for two people using a Disabled Persons Railcard.
It could cost much less than that once it is possible to see ticket prices for your dates of travel.
Also worth noting that Megatrain usually run exceptionally cheap fares between Exeter and Waterloo, but again the Olympics has got in the way and they are much more expensive for the next couple of months.0 -
Remember that the fare you have found is total for both of you and I think is a walk on ticket, superoffpeak return - you may be looking too far ahead for the cheap singles
For example on a random date in August you could do it with advance singles for under £70 total, return. Includes the tube transfer in London.0
