Alas, the promised review of the 0844 numbers seems to have got nowhere. What passes for management at the Co-op Bank has presumably been giving priority to dealing with the Bank's own bankruptcy. Their website
    http://www.co-operativebank.co.uk/customerservices/contactus/phone-us
still advertises the 0844 numbers, with 0845 alternatives (for some). It does not advertise the geographical numbers offered to smartphone users, which, of course, also work from landlines.
The management is, it appears, sleepwalking to another debacle on this issue. When (in 2014?) Ofcom's decision on the "unbundling" of charges for for 0844 and 0845 rip-off numbers comes into operation, the "access charges" for 0844 and 0845 will, I think, massively rise, and the "service charges" passed to the Co-op Bank's telco will have to be explicitly declared.

I have a Co-op credit card and when I discovered it had been used fraudulently (on a Polish betting site!) I tried to notify the Co-op fraud section. The only number on the card is an 0844 number, whether you're here or abroad. 40 pence a minute on a vodafone plan, and God knows what from abroad. I complained and was eventually refunded, and given these numbers:

    0161 855 0011
    and
    03457 212 212

Press # # to get straight through to a customer service advisor.

Hope this helps someone, but I think it's wrong to print only a high cost number on the card when you are trying to stop fraud.
