Of the two, I would go for an ordinary Oyster Card.
It costs £5, but that is refundable should you ever want to do so.
The £3 for the visitor's one is not refundable.

However, remember what you were told earlier about the 2for1 offers?
You need a paper ticket for that.

I too would advise sticking with paper tickets for the short time you will be in London.

ok, thanks. when you say paper tickets, do you mean the off peak day travel cards? like these? http://visitorshop.tfl.gov.uk/travelcards/off-peak-day/product/day-off-peak-travelcard.html

if so, would i need to buy 3 for each adult? one for fri evening, sat and sun? and the kids travel free.

i will also have the national rail tickets which i will buy to get me from ely to limehouse. do they not entitle us to 2for1?

The National Rail tickets will be valid to use with the 2for 1 vouchers, just show your return ticket. Kids aged 10 and under travel free on tubes, buses, Dock Land Light Railway and London overground routes. Just go to the lugguage pushchair barrier and touch your oyster and they follow you through the gate, similar on buses, just touch the oyster beside the driver on entry. Each adult will need an oyster and top up as required. You can get any small amount of unused credit (larger amounts you have to write off for) and your deposit from the tube station office before your journey home.

It is easy just to get an oyster card from the tube station on arrival and then top up as required. As you don't need the 2for 1 offers then Oyster will give you more flexibility in that it caps at the daily travelcard rate, but will charge less if you are not doing too many journeys in the day.

it does seem easier. how much do you think both cards would need for the 2 and a bit days tube, bus and clipper rides? obviously im not sure how many times we will be using these but im just looking for a rough idea what to put on to start off with. i know i can always top up if needed and as you say i can get any leftover and deposit back before we leave.

im really sorry i keep asking questions but ive no one else to ask...

if i travel from ely to kings cross and pay £71.25 using national rail website, then can i use the oyster card to go on the northern line to bank? then use the oyster again to go from bank to dlr at limehouse?

when i type in ely to limehouse (still £71.25, same as ely-kings cross) on national rail site it says, ely to kings cross, then kings cross to fenchurch, then fenchurch to limehouse, with 7 mins of walking from tower hill to fenchurch, so was thinking of using northern line as someone else mentioned as it seems easier.

hope this is all making sense?

also if i get off at kings cross and use northern line, is this at same place or do i need to go to a different station?

Well the maximum you will pay each day will be the peak travelcard fare for whatever zones you use.
Of course if you confine yourself to off peak, the maximum per day will be the off peak travelcard fare for whatever zones you use.

Look at a zones map to decide which zones you might use.

The full list of peak and offpeak travelcard fares are here.

    Yes you could.

    Yes, that too.

If you buy tickets from Ely to Limehouse, rather than Ely to Kings Cross (it will say London Terminals on that ticket), then you will have no need to use your Oyster Card to get to Limehouse and you can use either of those routes.
also if i get off at kings cross and use northern line, is this at same place or do i need to go to a different station?
All the same place... just follow the underground signs.

wealdroam- great, thanks for your replies!! :)

think i will buy ely-limehouse as the price is no different, and as it just says london terminals on tickets will use the northern line instead. great, i feel so much more organised now!
