'Self Employment' and JSA

Hi, can anybody help please? My OH has been asked if he will sell a sculpture that he made a while ago. He has been offered £60 and the guy wants to give him a cheque.

As he is on JSA he asked the jobcentre how he should declare this money as it's not technically 'earnings', however, they were not very helpful. They have suggested that as this is self employed earnings (even though he isn't self employed) he would need to sign off JSA and register with HMRC as self employed. However, another jcp person 'suggested' that if his costs exceeded his sales then he shouldn't bother as it's not a proper business.

First and foremost, this is a hobby, although certainly, during the making of the sculpture, he would have incurred charges (or expenses I guess you call them) such as buying clay, driving to shop to buy clay, glazes and other materials. He is trying to do the honest thing by declaring this money but it has been suggested to him by CAB that as his original costs would probably equal if not exceed the sale then it would not appear to be declarable, especially as he is not self employed. They suggested asking the job centre which has proved pretty fruitless. It all seems terribly confusing and contradictory, any thoughts please...thank you.
