Dubrovnik

We have booked a week in Dubrovnik for next April. Just looking for opinions if this is too long to spend in one city? Is there anywhere not too far away we could break the trip up a little? We have to fly in and out of Dubrovnik so not looking to spend too long driving around.

Maybe a night or two in a national park, or an island or another coastal place?

We like hiking, swimming, relaxing with a few drinks. Not looking for a museum filled day or a mad night club experience.

I have looked into day trips to Mostar already.

Or maybe Dubrovnik is good for a whole week and we should just relax and get on with it?

Thanks for any help!

We're going in a couple of weeks and have decided to only stay one night in Dubrovnik. We'll be spending about a week each in Mljet, which is the scenic national park island, and then Korcula, which is meant to be like a mini Dubrovnik, only quieter.

I think a week in Dubrovnik would be fine if you were doing some island day trips, such as Mljet and one or two others. That would still give you some relaxing days in town as well.

Mljet would be very quiet in April and you can't do a day-trip on the winter catamaran timetable. Would be good for hiking, though. Korcula or Kotor in Montenegro would be my choice. Croatia is great for sea-bathing, but the Adriatic is too cold for me in April.

There are some easy day trips from Dubrovnik. The beautiful island of Lokrum is a short ferry ride away and you can take a bus to a resort over the border in Montengro. Not many tourists venture to Trebinje in Bosnia Herzegovina but there is one bus a day, taking about an hour or so through the hills. The town is pleasant but what's quite shocking as you walk around is how all traces of its Muslim population appear to have vanished. To get back to Dubrovnik you'll need to flash a few euros at a local taxi driver and ask if he's prepared to cross the border.

You can organise enough trips and activities around Dubrovnik. And April is a good time for hiking (and pulling wild asparagus) but don't leave the marked paths, as there could still be landmines.

SaveTheEuro's recommendations are good! May I add suggestions like a trip by boat or bus to Cavtat. You could go on the Ron Brown memorial trail up in the hills near the airport where the American delegation's plane crashed. You have great views from there.

    Go Diving.
The centre of Dubrovnik is fantastic and worth a day or two. Also walk through Dubrovnik - Srd
The Island of Lokrum is a good day tour so is the National Park Mljet.
Franjevacki samostan (St Mary at Spilica)
is interesting, so is the ancient as well as recent history of villages around Dubrovnik.
  • Thank you so much everyone, this is exactly what we are looking for.

And yes, Diving! How could i forget...is there much to see? My other half is an avid diver.

Is it really going to be that cold in April?

Is it worth taking euros as well as Kuna?

    Appreciate the help.x

Not really if you are staying in Croatia. But you are close to the border with Montenegro and the Euro is their currency even though they're not in the EU.
