HALF TERM OCT IN LONDON - help please.

Hello

I am sorry about this, as I now that there are lots of threads re staying in London, but I am really struggling with this.

We are planning to spend 5 nights in London at October half term . Our boys are 10 and 9 and my OH is coming as well.

I have spent ages looking for accom - cheapest (but it needs to be ok, like a travelodge) I can find is £500 including breakfast.

Its situated in Blackfriars. Does the location and price this seem ok? It seems expensive to me, but I haven't been to London for years and am out of touch with prices.

This is a really big deal for us, as its such a lot of money. I will sort out cheap things to do, by using previous threads on the forum.

Thanks so much for your consideration.

Do you have to go for the whole week? Have you planned what you'll be doing for a week in London? Maybe a shorter trip would be better value?
  • Hi

Thanks for the responses. We wanted to go for 5 nights as my partner will need to take a full weeks leave from work. I have looked at individual nights and it still totals £500.

What bother me is that it appears places are starting to get booked up for this week concerned, so its a risk to wait for a Travelodge or Premier Inn sale.

    Thanks again.

It might be a little cheaper to stay somewhere a little further out of central London, invest in a couple of Oyster cards and use the Tube to travel in each day.

When in October is half term ? and which five days are you going ? I assume you're looking to share a single family room ?

A quick look at the Travelodge page seems to suggest that you should able to get most nights in most locations for well under £100 a night (for example, look at the London Central Waterloo, Southwark or Covent Garden) - a few nights seem to be getting up into the £90s but there are plenty of nights at £40-£50. If you like the traditional English breakfasts, find the nearest Wetherspoons or similar to get breakfast, which'll set you up for the entire day much cheaper than hotel breakfasts, otherwise just take bowls and a box of cereal!

I stayed here last time I took the Kids.. http://www.bennysbandb.co.uk/

They have a family room with breakfast for £82 or a flat with a new fitted kitchen for £90 a night. Prices are the same all year. tube station 2 mins away.

I would stay here again. xx

If you go to the Travelodge site you can get a family room at the Southwark TL which is a few mins walk from the tube station of the same name and about 10 mins walk form there to Waterloo for The Embankment, The Eye, Thames Boats to the Tower, House Of parliament, Big Ben and good transport. About 25 min walk to Covent Garden. At waterloo there is a Sainsbury's Express you can use to buy a meal deal sandwich lunch and snacks. Add the rooms to you basket and do one check out to get the cheaper rates as to block book you pay the higher rates for all nights. Kids eat breakfast free so I woudl book that as it is a good help yourself buffet type one with eggs, bacon, sausages, beans, Mushrooms, toast and spreads, cereals, milk, bakery items, fruit, yoghurts, tea, coffee and juices. For Sunday 28 Oct it is £45.80, Mon £39.50, Tues £89, Wed £75.75 and Thurs £39.50 so £289.55. Make sure you change the occupancy to 2 adults and 2 children and book breakfast online as it will work out cheaper at £13.30 for the four of you for breakfast each day. The Southwark Tl is a fairly new one with a store next door for paper etc. About a 15 minute tube journey (involving one change at Green Park to Piccadily line) to get to South Kensington for the Natural History and Science Museums. 15 minute direct journey from Southwark to Victoria if you are using Nations Express coaches or megabus coaches. Also Buckingham Palace if you fancy seeing the changing of the Guard is walking distance from Victoria.

Children aged 10 and under travel free on buses and tubes and just follow you through the lugguage/pushchir barrier at tube stations and just go onto buses with you. As you are staying you are best to get an oyster card on arrival at the train/tube station and top up as required as it caps at the daily travelcard rate and charges less for single journeys. If you are doing a lot of attractions one day and do not have a return train ticket to home, you may be best to purchase a daily Travelcard from the train station part of Waterloo station for the rail 2for 1 offers as oyster is not valid for these and you need a paper ticket with the Crows Foot National Rail logo on it which a Travelcard bought from a train station will have on it(Southwark is a tube station and a TC from there will only have the London transport log on it not thhe Crows Foot one). Check out the 2for 1 rail offers nearer the time and print off vouchers. Hopefully the Eye will be back on the offer after the summer again.

I would plan days in advance as there is so much to do and see and use ww.tfl.gov.uk to plan your journeys in advance. You can also use googlemaps to get walking directions and even do a virtual walk.

I just had a look and if you are looking for cheaper accomodation outside of the central area, Cricklewood Travelodge has £19 family rooms for Sun 28, Mon £42.75, Tues and Wed £25.50, Thurs £42.75. I will try to find the information someone wanted before about this TL on the outskirts.

    Edit:
I have found the post on this TL on the outskirts of London. I have since driven past it on my way to the M1 and it is a new build TL with a Tesco Express beside it. Although not cheap if you wanted to visit the Harry Potter Studios tour in Watford (must book in advance online) you can get a bus from outside the hotel to Kilburn High Road train station and get the train from there to Watford Junction and pick up the HP tour shuttle bus to the studios.

  • i don't know where you are travelling from but Feltham Travelodge in West London has cheap rooms. It is very close to the station and 30 mins by train to Waterloo (or a few minutes to Richmond where you can change to the Underground). Feltham has a McDonalds and supermarkets.

The Travel Lodge in Southwark is very nice, it has a Tesco Express just around the corner, a nice 24 hour shop next door and Carlos which is a nice coffee shop also next door.

It's in a good location, as previously mentioned good transport links and you can walk to the river and lots of the Southbank attractions.

There's a brand new Premier Inn just around the corner, it will be more expensive but opened a few weeks ago, you never know you may get a good deal
