Hi,
My partner and I are moving to Manchester for work. We are searching for property in Didsbury, Cheadle, Cheadle Hulme, and Wilmslow areas.
We have found and viewed a property we both really like in Cheadle Hulme. It's on the housing estate off Ladybridge road (the main road is called Twining Brook Road). I've heard it referred to as 'Twining Brook estate' and 'Ladybridge Park Estate'. It's at the right price and meets our requirements so we'd like to make an offer.
Is anyone on the forum familiar with Cheadle Hulme or live there? I've researched the area as much as possible but it's quite hard to get a good overview when living in a different part of the country.
House, neighbours on the estate, commute, distance to shops, etc all look good... Our main concern is crime and anti-social behaviour (over the usual amount for living in a city). I don't want to sound like a snob but some chav neighbours from hell have made my life a misery in my current house and we're hoping to avoid problems like that in our new house.
Is this an OK neighbourhood? The area on the other side of Councillor Lane (by Adswood Park) seems a little rough.

no, do not live near adswood, unless you want to return to your car on bricks!
If you are looking near this area you would be better off towards or in bramhall. most scrots are priced out of this area, which has a nice feel to it. Didsbury area is an up & coming place along with Fallowfield. Popular with students and young professionals. Heaton Moor is also nice. Wilmslow not bad, but I always think people who live in wilsmslow are prestbury & alderley edge wannabes!
I'm originally from london by the way & relocated north with work 5yrs ago. I live in Macclesfield now and have gotten to know the south manchester area very well. I prob wouldn't recommend Macc as an ideal area to relocate for those moving from london to north as it takes some getting used to, but it has grown on me & I like it that much I'm just about ready to complete on a house in the area. It's at the foothills of the peak district, there are salt of the earth people here & it's 20 mins direct train to Manchester Pic & 1hr 41mins to london euston.0 -
I lived in Wilmslow in the 1980s and it was very pleasant then.
I lived in the NW from 1979 to 2005 and thoroughly enjoyed it. Manchester is a great place to live and work. I hope you enjoy it.0 -
Not sure of your budget but have you thought of Hale/Altrincham/Timperley/Sale areas. Metro to City Centre from Altrincham in 30 minutes.
Cheadle Hulme is ok but very close to Adswood (mainly council housing).
What about Heald Green or Gatley areas within Cheadle with railway station and 10 minutes by train into City Centre?Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -
I know Ladybridge Park very well as my parents moved there about 15 years ago (Edenbridge Road) and it's a really lovely spot. The estate has a good mix of families and older residents and is well situated for good local amenities. The estate is unique as it has a residents club with function rooms, bar, restaurant and squash courts which has been a goodsend for Mum since Dad passed away 10 years ago as the community spirit is thriving.Yes Adswood can be viewed as a tough area but it is far enough away not to be a problem.I am not aware of any problems on Ladybridge Park.
Not much in Cheadle Hulme village by the way of shopping but there is a very good Waitrose and Asda are moving into the precinct in the Autumn.
Within 5-10 min drive you have 3 good retail parks Cheadle Royal (John Lewis/Sainsburys),Handforth Dean (M&S,Tesco,BHS Home and a new fashion store with Burtons,Dorothy Perkins,Miss Selfrdge etc) and Stanley Green (B&Q,Comet,T K Maxx and Next)
Loads of good pubs and restaurants around the area such as The March Hare,The Church Inn,The Hesketh and Cheadle Royal.
I agree with the other posts that Gatley and Cheadle would be good alternatives but to be honest all 3 areas are much of a muchness.0 -
Gatley, Cheadle and Heald Green are right under the flightpath though, very noisy and the planes are so close you can see people looking out of the windows at you.
Cheadle Hulme is a nice area, good links to Manchester and all points south. I'm originally from Bramhall though that's much more expensive due to the footballers who live there (but really it's a fur coat and no knickers kind of area!)
You'll be fine anywhere around there. And Bramall Hall on the doorstep is great!
Didsbury is very city-living, cosmopolitan, cafe culture and quite expensive.
Lived in Wilmslow for a while, posh, expensive again, it's ok. Macc is great.0 -
Its all about what you can afford ?
I lived in timperley near altrincham which has good metro links to central manchester.
Wilmslow and Alderley edge are expensive areas to buy but have a train station nearby.
Why not rent for 6/12 months and get to know the area and see which area you like0 -
Hi..I live in Cheadle Hulme, but the Bramall end rather than the Adswood end. I do work in Adswood but really would not choose to live there. Cheadle Hulme is good for trains/buses/schools/shops/bars/restaurants but perhaps the area you are looking at is just a bit to close to Adswood.0

Elasticmoney, thank you very much for your post.
I agree about the estate - it's a nice little area and a good mix of families and elderly residents. I immediately had no doubts about the estate - gardens all neat and tidy, good cars, people say hello as we walk around. I also like the fact it's quite self-contained - I wouldn't worry about my partner walking the dogs in a loop around the estate when it's dark.
I do really like this estate, and the house is perfect. I know it's on the Adswood side of Cheadle Hulme, but then as it's so self contained I don't think we'd get people passing through. And as for crime, we'll that can happen anywhere.0 -

There's quite a big contradiction in warning of proximity to adswood (which is about a mile away) whilst recommending fallowfield, which is next to moss side!

Don't worry... I'd discounted the advice as I think Didsbury can hardly be described as 'up and coming' and Wilmslow as 'not bad'!
On the subject of Adswood... Where is the worst areas? Which streets are the boundaries of Adswood?
Looking at the map, to the north of Ladybridge estate there is an office/industrial estate on Bird Hall Lane. A railway runs along the east side of it. Am I correct in thinking that the main bad areas are on the other side of the railway line from here? i.e. closer into Stockport. That this is roughly forms the boundaries between Cheadle / Cheadle Heath and Cheadle Hulme / Adswood?
The small housing areas just the other side of Councillor Lane (just around Ladybridge Primary / Lidl / Adswood Park) didn't seem too bad. I would want to look there, but I think it would provide sufficient buffer zone between Ladybridge Estate and Adswood.
Or is everything the other side of Councillor Lane to be avoided at all costs?0
