I've left houses spotless and always moved into horribly dirty ones! Where is karma when you need her? My last buy was a new build and that was clean!

Moving into a clean house would make me more predisposed to forward mail etc. promptly to the vendor....

I would clean the whole place pretty thoroughly - even if it wasn't like that when you moved in, it's the best way to make sure you get your deposit back!

I agree with leaving your property as clean as you would want to find your new home. It promotes good will and retains your dignity.

When I bought my last flat, they kept me waiting for 5 hours before I could go and get the key as her mother was still cleaning it. When I finally got there it was filthy and they'd taken most of the light bulbs.

Then, the vendor had the audacity to ask the EA to contact me to see if she could pop round for her mail. Suffice to say, this request was declined and I bagged the mail up over the course of a few weeks before dropping it off at the EA's office.

I rent. last time we moved we left the place immaculate, even down to borrowing my father in law's carpet cleaner and brother in law's steam cleaner and cleaning all carpets, doors, skirtings, light fittings etc.

we moved in here and it was a sty that smelled of dog and damp.

When I sold a house, I left two bottles of wine on the counter (one white, one red). I didnt need to bother cleaning because the house had been refurbished for sale which was lucky.

When I bought a house, it was clean enough, a few grubby marks here and there, but it was clear the vendor had at least tried. I was a little disappointed to find nothing extra was left, but hey ho. I was however awestruck to get a 'care package' from Halifax a few days later...wow! Wine, soap, multitool, cleaning stuff, chocolates etc. Hats off to them I was stunned.
