Should all GPS devices be classed as a car security feature?

Hi, I have a car where I have an iPod hidden behind the dashboard. The only way for someone to know it is there is if they physically remove the dash, I assume that the insurance will not accept this as a GPS tracking device even though I can log on to any computer and see exactly where my car is... much like a more expensive GPS Tracking Device (more expensive because they usually require an annual subscription).
Given the fact I can perform the same functionality in regards to tracking my vehicle if it has been stolen, should I ring the insurance company and tell them I have a GPS device capable of tracking my car in the event of theft and if I did, would they accept it and should they refuse are they legally allowed to discriminate the device because it is not one that requires a subscription even though it meets the performance requirements and can and has been used by police forces in other examples of car theft?

There is more to a tracking security device. Have a look at Thatcham to see what is required for approval.
If you can get Thatcham approval you might get a discount.0 -

Can you remove the ipod ?
If you can then it's not a permanent "tracker" as you call it
just curious as to what you mean0 -

Yeh o.k. but a Correctly fitted tracker unit will be fitted somewhere you can't find it
that's the whole idea of it
the way the op said it I thought they meant an i pod they own and "hide" in the car behind the dashboard :cool:0 -
I'd like to know just how your iPod supposedly works as a GPS tracking device. Do any iPod models even have GPS? Won't it need to be on all the time and have some sort of data connection?0

You'd like to think so, but due to the size of the unit you are limited to where you can put them.0 -

I'd say yes as it still works when the unit is removed from the car.0 -
