Cement/mortar has dropped out between eaves & rooftiles - help!

Bits of cement/mortar have been dropping out of the space between the eaves and rooftiles (about 3 - 4inches wide). Can I patch the gaps or do I need to remove remainder and start again?

Is there a mix that would be recommended for this job?

Thanks Stuart

Do you mean eaves or verge?

Eaves mortar is rare and should not be replaced, but replaced with a plastic comb filler

For verge, never repoint, tiles need to be taken off and rebedded. Repointing will fall back out in a year or two

Either way , use building sand/sharp sand/ cement mix - 3:1:1 (or 2:1:1), and quite dry

I think I mean the verge - my gap between the roof tiles and the fascia board on the side of the house.

Would you recommend a dry verge system in preference?

    Yes that's the verge

Dry verges are OK, but it depends what tiles you have. They will be a bit more work too, so it probably comes down to cost.

In practical terms however, if the mortar has fallen out, then unless you renew all of it, it may fall out in other places too. So the time and expense of renewing it all in mortar, you may well find it easier and more cost effective to renew in plastic dry verge

I would be inclined to just repoint the missing or defective mortar.

Once you get up the ladder/scaffold you should be able to tell which areas are loose by tapping them gently with a hammer and listening to the sound it makes. Dont try to hack out any mortar that is sound as you'll probably just break the tiles.

Get a dry verge, far less likelihood of problems later on.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.
