Thanks, everyone, for your support on this - I'm hoping that some of the things that have happened to me will ring a chord with others who are in debt, & that it will help them to see others have been there & have managed to get through it. For those who haven't been in such debt, they'll see that a series of life events can really hit you for six, & put you in a position that you never thought you'd be in.
It's really helping me to do this diary. For several months, I've only been able to see the low points & so those are the ones that stick in my memory the most. But when I look back on this, I realise I have done a lot for myself in the last 18 months. Dealing with the end of a relationship I thought would be forever (15 years together), finding a new home & setting it up from scratch - it's exhausting, mentally & physically. Dealing with the council is a nightmare, & if I heard that a particular bailiff company had gone bust & a particular bailiff had got the biggest ever festering boils on his meat & two veg, I'd be very pleased. But every time something needs doing, instead of automatically throwing money at the problem or just getting someone else to do it for me, I swallow the fear that immediately starts to rise in my throat & just think about it step by step, & then do my best to do it myself. Never did I ever think I'd be able to hardboard a floor, but I did it & now I know I can do it again. Managing to do that gave me the encouragement to try fitting the blind, & I did that too - conquering one challenge makes facing the next one that little bit easier. :j
You never stop growing, & I've undergone a lot of personal growth - I feel like a different person now. Though times have been hard & I've definitely had my evenings of crying, I wouldn't take my ex back now if he begged me on his hands & knees. I ended the relationship, & I'm going to keep him as much a part of my past as my debts will eventually be. My new place is taking ages to do, but it's getting there & I know that I will finish it eventually.
As for the court date, they've told me I can just turn up on the day, as long as I'm there before 10am, so that really helps. I'm determined to be there by the end of March - the fees apparently go up in April, & I don't want the higher cost to put me off track. I'm going to use their support services to help me get through the day - I've gained a new independence, but I also realise that I shouldn't be too proud or think there's anything wrong with asking for help if I need it. I want to start the new tax year with a new start.
Thanks again.BSC #53 - "Never mistake activity for achievement."

Hi, I'm going for it on the 28th. The fact that I now know the fees are going up in April is reason number 599 why I need to do it sooner rather than later. I'm feeling a bit crap at the moment because my boyfriend dumped me on Saturday - mostly, I think, because of my debts, but other stuff too. Anyway, despite feeling glum, its nice to read your diary and realise that its not all bad.

20 March -
The bad news - got a letter from the council saying the rent goes up by nearly £4 pw from April.
The good news - got a separate letter from the council with my rent statement, showing I'm almost £200 in credit! :j They must be in shock seeing that - I had big arrears for months! I'm paying the rent monthly & I'll still be in credit at the end of this month, so I'll make sure I pay enough to cover the rent increase & then the credit will look good on my payment record. Thank goodness it's only a week 'til payday, then I can make the month's payment.BSC #53 - "Never mistake activity for achievement."

26 March - got 3 letters about payments not being received. I cancelled all the direct debits last week, & now they're writing for their money. I can't wait for this week's hearing to be over. Even though I know I won't be getting these letters for much longer, it's still horrible getting them. The first thing I look for when I get these letters is to see whether the amount they're claiming has gone up - it would be so nice to get letters with something positive in them, instead of "we don't appear to have received your payment" or "we are writing to inform you that our direct debit instruction was refused".
I'm off work for the rest of this week (using up my annual leave before the end of the financial year), so I'm going to concentrate on my 'statement of affairs' tomorrow. Until now, it's all been in draft in a Word document because I've been stalling about putting anything on the actual form (I don't like looking at the figures), but I've got to get on with it now.
Paid the rent today :j - did an extra £25 as I said the wrong figure because I was reading a letter at the same time. I wanted to pay an extra £50 to stick to my pledge of paying an extra £50pm, so I'll have to make another payment this week. I've got too many things racing through my mind this week.BSC #53 - "Never mistake activity for achievement."
