Marks and Spencer Cake reviews

Options
Hi, my MIL2B offered to make our wedding cake for us, but we were talking last night about maybe going for M&S cakes to make it easier for her. I've never tasted one, but heard they were quite good, but after reading some of the reviews on the website and seeing that some people got cakes that were lopsided and that some of the icing had gouges out of it or thumbprints or was uneven, I'm reconsidering.

My MIL2B isn't too fussed about if she ends up baking it or not, but I was just wondering if anyone had bought these cakes and if they were good or not? And also if anyone has any recommendations about size, etc.

Thank you!:D

Can't tell you about whether M&S cakes are any good or not, but I've found a wedding cake size guide here:

We had them & they were great!
I must admit I didn't take a spirit level to them or sruitinize for fingerprints, but they looked fine on a stand with a small flower & cake topper.

The fruit cake was lovely & rich. The sponge was moist & light. The chocolate cutting slabs were very nice too.
Cost us £100 ish for enough cake to feed 160 people.

Thanks, the reviews in the main are good, but it seems like they get it really right or really wrong. I wouldnt mind if they were slightly off balance because they're not being balanced on top of one another. Or had a couple of small marks that could be hidden! £100ish is quite good for that amount of people.

Yeah, we managed to get the 3-4-2 offer which was great, although I've heard they might not be doing that offer this year.

We collected ours the day before the wedding, and even a week after the sponge wasn't too dry, and the fruit cake lasted a month & was still good (we had loads left over!)

I had a look back at the 3-4-2 thread to remind me, its a bit disappointing, but it looks as though we could get the xl, large and medium for £120 which isnt too dear.

You can order samples of the cake. I trialled M&S and Waitrose and in my opinion M&S was better.

I was recomended to order the extra large, large and medium as the small is really small. I am planing on just adding simple ribbons with a bow and brooch.

We had the bottom tier of our daughter's cake made (fruitcake) and then bought M&S sponge for the remaining tiers. It was beautiful. Over the years have also ordered various celebration cakes which have been excellent too.

Thank you, for the replies. I think we'll try the samples and as long as the cake tastes nice, we'll persuade MIL2B to go down that route. We're planning on decorating them with sugar leaves anyway, so if the icing is damaged it'll be covered up with that.

We had the milk chocolate rose cake - couldn't fault it in any way, it looked amazing and tasted fantastic!
