Sandwiches ,crisps and items allowed with hand luggage

What are you allowed to take through with hand luggage at airports...
l'm flying from East Midlands Airport soon and would like to know items and food allowed through before l get there and have to throw things out that's not allowed on the plane...
l know you cannot take drinks/fluid through and sharp objects, but can l take sandwiches, crisps, and some food items l will use on holidays..
Butter,Philadelphia cheese, crackers etc.. or do these need to go in hold..

They do have food abroad you know :D.

I would expect most of the items you've mentioned to be acceptable, although if you're not planning to eat them on the flight I'd put anything that can't be broken in your hold luggage - so butter and Philly in the hold (where they'll stay cool, although make sure they are in sealed bags), crackers in hand baggage.

Border Control on one of the Freeview channels is crammed with people taking forbidden foodstuff into other countries. Usually Vietnamese or Thai going into Oz or NZ though.

you won't be able to take butter or philadelphia cheese through in hand luggage unless they were in 100ml or less containers & in your little plastic bag - they would count as pastes. Crackers will be fine - but hand luggage size/weights are fairly restricted now so why would you not just put them in your hold luggage?

If you have hold luggage booked, just put all your foodstuff in that.

I took a black pudding once in hand luggage! The security bloke examined it minutely just in case it was a smart bomb or something though!

Where are you going? Some countries have limits on the amount of foodstuffs (i.e. Norway, but it's a pretty high limit) and for some you aren't allowed to take any. (I don't think you are allowed to take any food into America...) And some just have bizarre rules like no tinned food. I think if you are within the EC then you can take what you like, although mayonaise got classed as a liquid in my luggage back once - fortunately it was a small jar.

Or America -Fruit, dairy, fresh meat etc is taken off you and I've seen them use sniffer dogs checking hold luggage too.

You must be very popular with passengers sitting near you with your smelly cheeses on the flight. It amazes me how inconsiderate some people can be when travelling.
