Seems a little odd this research! Parkinsons is really easy to spot when you've seen someone with it. Although saying that, it took an orthopedic surgeon to spot my father has it!

The research is aimed at making a diagnosis before it comes so apparent.

    Shadow had some concerns.

but if you dial 141 before the phone number then your phone number is withheld, I'm not sure what possible risk is involved with speaking for a short while.

It was explained to me as a potential early warning system, by measuring the tone and delays of the voice then they can predict Parkinson's. In a small sample they correctly determined with 86% accuracy who did and didn't have the condition, with larger numbers of samples then the computer will have more data to go on and therefore become more accurate. It's possible a simple voice analysis could be available to doctors within a few years and with a family history of the condition I would love the opportunity for a pain/risk free test that could be repeated regularly and treatment for Parkinson's started sooner rather than wait until the symptoms are making life hell.

I'm not worried. I've taken the test. I have a relative with Parkinson's and am happy to help with the research.

But then by the time the person with parkinsons has realised there is something wrong its gone past that point hasn't it?

I'm guessing that, if this research comes up with useful results, it will be used as an early screening programme.

When you're 60, you get sent a bowel cancer screening kit. You don't have to wait to have symptoms before you take a screening test.

In the same way, the Parkinson's test could be used for everyone over a certain age or could be targeted at the close relations of Parkinson's suffers.
