If you have a chandlers near you they often sell a tar remover ... as often needed by ... old tars

I used to use eucalyptus oil to remove tar from clothing. It worked a treat. No idea if it would work on floorboards but it is fairly cheap for a small bottle and might be worth a try?

Thanks for all the replies

We used an electric planer on it yesterday which seems to be, in conjunction with everything else we have tried, cutting through it quite well :j
Still going to need a good ol' sanding but we'll get there eventually

Go to Halfords, buy some Tar Remover designed for use on car paintwork.
