Away for 6 months - options for car?
Hi,
This is probably a) a stupid question and b) a long-shot, but I'm going to enquire anyway. I am due to go travelling for 6-7 months in September and have not yet decided what to do with my car. I am trying to avoid selling it as it is a nice economical diesel that I think will keep me going for my needs for many more miles yet (currently <50k on clock). However, I'm also scraping around to fund this career break so have been thinking about any alternative options.
I've just read on MSE about renting your car out to generate extra income, however my car/location was not accepted by the website that MSE linked to as 'rentable' ( no precise details given). Does anybody know of any schemes in this general category where you can safely rent out your car on a short/mid-term basis?
My parents have offered to run it for me (mum would sell her current car as she's looking to upgrade anyway) and pay me the difference/depreciation. I don't think that over the course of 6 months, with the type of miles that my mum does, this would be a significant amount, but it is an option that would guarantee care of the car. Ultimately, depending on how saving up goes, I may have to sell it, but this would be a last resort.
Sorry if that got a bit rambly but if any of you have any knowledge of rental type schemes that may suit my situation, I'd like to hear about them.
The car in question is a cute little VW Lupo, diesel in VGC.
Thanks in advance

Sell it to your mum.0

The phrase "don't be gentle, it's a rental" springs to mind. Let your mother use it and when you return you will have a car waiting.0

Renting it out Guess letting a joy rider have it would be the same.Google gives you answers use it.........0

i agree with above posts, let your mom use it (unless she has a heavy right foot and likes hanging around in "cruise clubs"), you know her and she hopefully wont do wrong by you if something goes tits up0

I would sell it an average Joe and buy another car in 6 months time, would never advise selling cars to family or friends due to the possible problems of secondhand cars.
Would save you changing the cambelt and water pump too!"Dream World" by The B Sharps....describes a lot of the posts in the Loans and Mortgage sections !!!0 -
Sell it and buy a replacement when you return. It's only a run of the mill car. Different if it was something exotic or rare.0
