Washing machine - draining properly?

Got a new washing maching last month. Today when load nearly finished spinning the power cut out. Have plugged into other sockets etc., still no power. There was still water in the filter bit under the door - could it be a filter fault which has tripped some kind of cut out thing (although still no power) or is it that the water was still hanging about here because it's a power fault? Just so I can be very clear when complaining tomorrow! Thank you.
