Selecting a Holiday Inn close to London, near train/tube...which one?

Hi,

I'm thinking of booking the Holiday Inn at Hemel Hempstead for a short break, mainly to visit central London. Would this be a convenient location? (price is dictating the location!)

I'd appreciate advice before booking,

thanks

I'd check the prices for Ealing, Crown Plaza which is far West and next to the tube, and Chingford HI Express which is very close to Walthamstow tube. Less than central but good links.

The extra money you will spend on the hotel will save the train fares into Euston.

We stayed at Hammersmith earlier in the year and paid £105 for two nights using Greenroom 2 for 1 offer. Tube was easy to find and about a five minute walk. Some friends stayed in Earls Court and said the same. Both of these are Holiday Inn Express so you get free breakfast too. http://www.greenroom.co.uk/wrs

Fares will be more expensive if you stay at Hemel Hempsted as it is outside the London transport area so you will have fares into London and then have to get a Travel card or use Oyster on arrival for your travel in London. It is about 30 miles from London. If a short break you would be better staying in London or just on the outskirts to save on time traveling fares and also you will be limitied as to how late you can stay out in London due to last train times.
  • We've just stayed at the holiday inn at Watford junction and really couldn't recommend it enough. We got the train into Watford junction station (virgin fare finder) and the hotel is literally a 1 minute walk from there in the day( down a ginnal) or 3 mins on the main roads.
The train into London Euston took about 20mins , we bought a day travel card and cost about £24 for 2 adults and 2 kids with a family rail card.. The ticket also allowed us to travel freely on tubes etc
Also I don't know if you have this link but I always get the best rates using it

If you aren't a member of the priority club, I'd suggest you do so.. It's free but gives you unlimited Internet access free and use on the computers in the lobby.

I would try to get closer to the centre than Hemel and then absolutely get an Oyster Card for your travel. It will halve your travel costs and speed you thru the ticket barriers like a local, not a tourist :-)

I've stayed at the Holiday Inn Express at Hemel Hemptead a couple of times for trips in to central London. The Hotel is nice, it has free parking and is almost opposite Apsley rail station which has frequent rail services in to Euston. (I think the Holiday Inn (not express) is also close to Hemel Hempstead railway Station).

No doubt there are better and closer hotels but it's probably best to to compare the full price of a trip not just the hotel room price. I chose Hemmel as coming from the north, it's just off the M1 and so avoids the M25 and/or journey into the London area and saves petrol. The parking is free, so that is also good.

While the hotel is further away, it's only 30 minutes by train and you can buy tickets which include a Travelcard or buy in advance and get them cheaper. An off-peak walk on day return fare from Apsley (50p more from Hemmel) is £11.50 or £16.90 inc a Travelcard (which works as well as an Oyster card), If you have a rail card, it's even cheaper.

Where are you travelling from? And where in London are you eventually going?

    And your budget?
