How much should we expect to pay a carpet fitter?

Hubby and I are wanting to replace the carpet on our hall stairs & landing and having been through the process in other rooms before and having a good idea of the various costs, think it might be worth ordering the materials online then getting in an independent carpet fitter to do the job.
Having priced up the materials, it looks like buying online should save us about £250, which will probably mean the difference between getting the carpet we really like versus a cheaper one.
Now all we need to know is how to find a decent carpet fitter and how much we can expect them to charge. Can anyone advise on the likely cost? The labour cost quoted to us by one of our local stores for the same job was £95 - would this be about the same if we called someone in to do the one-off job or should we expect it to be higher? It's for a smallish hallway that has 14 standard-sized stairs plus two 3m2 landings.

i wouldn't have thought you would get it done much cheaper than £90, by the time you've taken transport costs etc it wouldn't be worthwhile to do for anything less ,unless it's only a 10 minute job0

£80 or £90 is about right for stirs, hallway and landing. It's the one that takes the most time.Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0

The fitter will only guarantee his work, if the fitting fails due to poor materials you wont have any comebackHi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0

Try asking your fitter for an all-in price. You may well be surprised! Mention that you were looking on-line, but for the hassle factor would rather have one person do the whole job. He'll probably come in a bit more than buying all the stuff individually, but probably not by much.
He'll also plan it for you, meaning you may end up buying less carpet than you thought you needed.Unless it is damaged or discontinued - ignore any discount of over 25%0
