On a practical level, as a wedding present for a couple who didn't have much money to start their new home with, I made up a hamper with a big laundry basket filled with really practical things like clothes pegs, dishcloths, scourers, tea towels, kitchen rolls, dusters, empty spray bottles, white vinegar (with instructions for use), bicarbonate of soda (also with instructions), Stardrops (of course!), a sewing kit, scissors, dustpan and brush, a kitchen timer, and lots of other bits and pieces. I had enough notice to be able to add things every time I went shopping so, although it ended up full of goodies, it was economical to do. I also added fun things like packets of Love Hearts, chocolates, and a bottle of sparkling wine and two glasses. They were really pleased with it.

When my best friends got married in 2009, I had a photograph of the two of them that I'd given them a print of one Christmas that I knew they loved (it was the only one they had for ages of the two of them together & was out with all their family photos). I used this to order a personalised wedding day card from Hallmark online. It didn't cost a great deal and they absolutely loved it.

If you can get some reasonably priced towels or a towel bale you can make a towel wedding cake as illustrated at this link http://www.thinkwedding.com/Art-Wedding_Towel_Cake.htm

I've done this a few times and it's always gone down well - it can be as simple or elaborate as you want.

Obviously not a gift you can send through the post though!
