Need Advice Please/Payment protection

I have an abbey credit card with payment protection cover which i had while i was working full time. Ive now got a child who's 2 years old and unfortunately split with her dad last year and am now claiming benefits and do not work.

Ive been trying to pay my credit card as normal since i stopped working but am just struggling now and finding it hard. The payment protection cover is £40 a month alone!

My question is does the payment protection cover, cover me for being umemployed/on benefits? And if not, what route shoud i take?

Any kind advice would be very much appreciated x

Don't you have the paperwork with the terms? At the very least, it would be worth giving customer services a call to see if you are covered (number should be on your credit card statement).

I tend to think these PPI policies are a complete rip-off (just my opinion) so I would be interested to know if you get any satisfaction.

If you are not covered, you will at the very least be able to cancel the PPI policy which will save you £40 per month but don't do this until you are sure that you are not covered and have exausted any claim/appeals process.

I do have a certificate of insurance which says...

You are not covered if unemployment is caused by your own wilful actions

Which im assuming gettting pregnant is my own action!?

Would i be able to claim stating i didnt realise the full details of the policy because whether i didnt read the policy properly or not, they dont explain them to you at all.

And on the phone, they say to take it out in case of unemployment, illness etc and basically it doesnt cover you for all types of unemployment does it?

As far as I am aware, it would be unemployment in the fact of being made redundant at your job. I would call the dept and ask for clarification on that matter, but as lee suggests, don't cancel unless you are sure that you do not need it. Hope this helps!

Whether or not it was explained fully to you, which it wouldnt be, your only given a brief summary over the phone, it's up to you to read the policy document and know what you are and are not covered for.
You would have no chance claiming as a result of not being aware of what your covered for.

Its worth giving them a call, but I very much doubt that it would cover you for leaving your job due to pregnancy.

No it doesnt, only unemployment that was caused through no fault of your own, e.g. being made redundant.

Like has been said, these policies vary so much its best to give them a call to find out

Ok thanks for both of your advice.

I'll give them a ring on monday and see if im covered or not. If not, do you think i should cancel as £40 less would be very useful at the moment?

But being pregnant is not a method of leaving work. i.e. did you resign because you were pregnant, were you sacked because you were pregnant or were you made redundant etc.

As others have said, It's a very important distinction because the policy will only pay out under certain circumstances.

Also, being pregnant gives you additional rights to help protect your employment. i.e. you can’t just be sacked because your pregnant.

    No.

    Correct.

They won’t over you for anything that they consider you brought about by your own actions – resigning, getting sacked for misconduct etc.

Something I was trying to put on my original post was that you can also ask them to freeze the interest given your circumstances. Some card providers are more helpful than others but it is certainly worth a try. You will be able to get a lot more advice and help about this sort of thing from the friendly folks at the debt free wanabee board (DFW) here. Good luck!
