Car Dealer Won't Refund or Repair

I went with my son 2 weeks ago to choose a second hand car as his had developed a serious engine fault so he needed another quickly. We spent ages looking round and he decided on a C-Max for £2,500 (53 reg). The dealer said it has 3 months warranty and he will MOT it prior to collection, which he did. My son did have a short test drive and all seemed OK. A few days later, he needed to go to Leeds (200 miles away) and the car developed aloud knocking noise and a couple of other queries so he asked the dealer if he could have a look at it. Now the fun starts..... he said he can't get it into the garage for a week, then he said he would have to "ask the boss" - we were under the impression he was the boss. My son has said he wants a refund as he has lost confidence in them and agin "ask the boss".... I get the feeling they are fobbing him off? What are my son's rights and what can he do? How can we find out who "the boss" of this garage is?
Many thanks for any help!

Well, how long will it take that person to "ask the boss" and what is the boss's reply?

You can ask for the goods to be repaired / replaced.

I had a similar problem recently with a dealer in Bradford, I had a fault with my car in the first 100 miles, he paid for that fault to be fixed. Then again within the first three weeks the clutch started to go, he was unwilling to repiar that so I put him under notice of intention to go to court, he got in touch the day before I was due to lodge papers with the court and refunded me in full for the price I bought the car for.
