they are not offering cash - they are offering store credit.

The only way to get too matching working sofas would be put the credit they are offering and another £800+ towards it. Ok, that way gets us two new sofas for £800 quid but we don't have the £800 and weren't planning to buy new sofas for another 5 years!

Doesn't anyone else see this as unfair?

We paid £1800 for two sofas which we expected to work for 5+ years (hopefully 10).

This hasn't happened - and the company is telling us that the only way to achieve this is to spend another £800!

As for the £50 per year, I am only quoting what i read elsewhere on this forum!

Yes you're replacing old for new.

The fact you cannot afford the difference doesn't make the offer unfair.

Why not negotiate a cash payout and purchase a 2nd hand suite? Or perhaps just return the faulty one and get a cash payout..

But you keep missing the point that you've had 5 years use out of both sofas, of which only 1 has a fault and the retailer is giving you £800 to replace that particular one which is near enough what you paid for that one in the first place.

I think their offer is more than fair but if you don't agree then the only option open to you is a legal one and I very much doubt you'd get such an outcome in the small claims court.
  • Hi, their offer seems fair when you take into consideration trading standards expect upholstery furniture to only last 6 or 8 years! It looks like they've used 8 years so the longer of the two. A cash alternative would usually only be half the original offer. Good luck, but they seem to be very reasonable in their offer.
  • I also agree that you wouldn't get a better outcome at court, although they may make the retailer pay it in cash rather than store credit.

You've got a 5 year old sofa, any remedy would take this fully into account.

    I dont get it.

They have 3 Sofa and 2 Sofa deals that start at £1197.

Their offer seems fair, genuine and reasonable. Do more research and ask what sort of discount they can do as well.

Their offer seems fair to me, it's not their fault that you haven't got the extra £800, BUT there is no reason why you shouldn't make a counter-offer, and by all means tell them that you can't afford to make up the difference based on their first offer. Treat their offer as the start of a negotiation, rather than a fait accomplis.

Remember, that £818 figure is their first offer.
Maybe suggest that you would accept £900 if they offered it, and settle somewhere in between.
  • Thank you Wealdroam :)
