Don't any solicitors bank with Natwest?

Outsourced to India after RBS group sacked most of their IT workers in 2010.
The problem has been attributed to a maintenance patch going wrong and corrupting the system. But what company applies patches midweek, rather than at the weekend, and doesn't have backups that can be brought online within minutes? All smells very fishy to me.
Actually, for a change of this type the weekend is the worst time to do it, because the core banking systems don't run then. So if you implemented on Saturday you wouldn't know whether it had worked until Monday evening, by which time you'll have had all the weekend's transactions built up. The best days to do this (and indeed, what happened in this case) are Tuesday or Wednesday, so you have already processed the larger volume of transactions that go through Monday's batch, and you avoid the extra data that usually goes through at the end of the week.
As for FireWyrm's claim, well, I won't say it's completely implausible, but you'd have to throw away a large number of more feasible alternatives first. I write as someone who worked at RBS on systems linked to the core processing for 15 years, and although my knowledge is out of date, having left 4 years ago, many of the core systems have been around in some form for the last 40 years. And any talk of servers is irrelevant, these are mainframe systems.0 -
the government doesn't need to resort to subterfuge in order to steal money, they do it quite openly...witness the pensions tax grab and any number of other wheezes. They might however need at some point to control the movement of money. Banknotes are worthless pieces of paper, just like the BOE's 'guarantee' of up to £85K per account. It's ok to guarantee one or a few thousand people...try doing the same when you're guaranteeing millions of accounts. Unfortunately, banks arnt run like Vegas, they don't actually have to have money to back up the tokens in play. All banking is illusion. It's only a bank as long as the weasle doesn't pop, so round and round she goes, where she'll stop nobody knows....
The UK is a sovereign nation with its own currency, it could print all it needs should it need to guarantee bank credits..
Of course that creates other problems....0 -
Well I for one dont believe for one second this was all a 'computer issue'. Frankly, it's inconceivable that a bank should effectively cease to trade for two days...
I can completely believe it.
My previous bank "upgraded' my business account service so that credit card statements couldn't be downloaded any more. You had to ring up and speak to someone to get transaction details.
Any banking system which thinks that's even remotely a sensible use of time and money is clearly incapable of organising a drinking session in a brewery.0 -
Given the computer issues at Natwest, I was expecting a whole raft of posts "My house purchase/sale has not completed because my solicitor banks with Natwest", but nary a one. Friday is a big day for completions, so how come it's all gone smoothly?
a friend was due to exchange contracts on wednesday... didn't happen and heard nothing from his solicitors (EA-affiliated
), couldn't get through to them on the phone wednesday or thursday , finally got through friday and they blamed NW ... so far today nothing has happened and he can't get through to them again...
ie. NW is conveniently being used as an excuse for some other cokkup elsewhere...:rotfl:0 -
I just logged into my NW account online, and it all seems to be working normally. No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0

Not really worth feeding the troll..
Trolls post inflammatory comments designed to cause anger or upset and provoke a reaction for no other reason than to enjoy the resulting flame war.
You should learn the difference between valid conversion/opinion and trolling.Debt Free! Long road, but we did it

If the sh#t hits the fan then paper money will be worthless as previously noted, the only currency people will recognize is gold, why do you think the price has soared these last few years, maybe they know something we dont.0

When you say legacy - that's just too right. The core systems date from the 1960's, written in COBOL.No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0
