outdated internet explorer

just started using a laptop that has not been used for sometime

i keep getting told i am using an outdated internet explorer, i have tried to update it several times but keep getting a message saying that the service pack does not support it any help would be gratefully recieved

Have you run windows update?

Is it Windows XP? If so you need, as Santer says, to run updates, so that it is on Service Pack 3, with IE8. To mitigate virus problems also make sure that if used, Java, Adobe Flash, and the AV itself are also all current.
