I have a 4 year old Dell Studio with 4 USB ports my question is are they all equal or is one of them a “sleep and charge” port i.e. the laptop does not have to be on for it to charge my kindle?
I tried the Dell site but they are not much help.
Thanks

Usually when you turn off a PC, but leaving the mains power on/attached, the motherboard is in dormant mode - often when you open up you will see a diode light on. So in theory, depending on the board design, I would expect the usb ports to be "powered".
I don't expect you will see any documentation on this, the best way is to try it, nothing to loose.0 -

I left it on overnight and this morning the kindle is fully charged. The laptop was plugged in. I have since found out that a dedicated "sleep and charge" port is yellow on the inside - non of mine are yellow.0 -
My laptop had one of these special ports; it has a little lightning symbol next to it to distinguish it from the others. They are very handy!0

Probably it would cost Dell fractionally more to have a yellow-inside USB socket rather than the usual colour. The "Why don't you try it?" solution seems to have worked!0
