Problem with new front door.

Hi we had 2 new doors fitted on Tuesday, front and back paid 1185.00 both upvc, anyway thought we had a good look and no problems so Wednesday night went and payed him via a personal cheque, was looking at the front one yesterday(Friday) and noticed a cut or slash in the bottom of the front one, roughly about an inch long so got a thin piece of paper and it goes right through!so obviously had been done when fitted, rang him up to explian this and he was saying well i dont know how thats happened sort of thing but has said he will come and have a look early next week.Hubby is worried if it rains water willl get in and ruin the door, anyone had this experience or problem before?I feel because we have payed he wont want to admit responsibility.

Phone your bank immediately and stop the cheque. It won't have cleared yet.

Then write to the supplier telling him that you have stopped the cheque and will reinstate it once the problem is resolved.

  • We had talked about this can I ring the bank today?(Saturday)I dont want to have to do it really but i dont think i have any other option .Do I have to write to him? or would a phone call do it?Thanks.
  • Quick update rang the bank and stopped the cheque 10.00 charge,so now he may be more interested in sorting out the problem.Sorry to sound dim but if I have to write to him what shall i say,i hate things like this!
  • oh dear we didnt get round to telling him we had stopped the cheque was waiting for him to get back to us(I know I should have done)and he rang on Thursday night and said he could fill the door with resin husband said not happy with that so he said abruptly i will get you a new door and hung up,so husband didnt get round to mentioning it,got a call tonite he is not happy he said he has written 4 cheques out on the strength of my cheque and will get charged 30.00 x4= 120.00 in bank charges! because of the stopped cheque,he is now saying he has lost money on the job,I said I will pay you 600.00 tomorrow for the back door and what agreement can we come to re front door? he says he will get a rep out to look at it next week,I know we havent been really fair with him by not telling him but by his attitude would he have come if he had been paid in full?It is not a nice situation to be in,I sometimes wonder if it is worth having any work done on your house at all,he had given us a quote for the windows but perhaps we should forget that now.

when i had my front door fitted there was a small dent in it but i never thought about stopping the payment i just assumed that the problem would be sorted out i rang the company and they came and had a look then ordered me another one straight away but i still paid on the day the faulty one was fitted then just waited until the next arrived a few weeks later, good luck i'm sure things will work out in the end. it also had scratches on around the frame (surrounding the panel) which i was told could be buffered out but when the next panel arrived the fitter was unable to buffer the scratches out and by this time i couldnt be bothered mithering anymore it was not the end of the world you cant see them unless you look for them so i left it, but bear in mind i'd spent most of the year with a boarded up door waiting for insurance replacement after a fire so the door was a godsend anyway!! i always recommend the company to everyone and many people have commented on how lovely my new door is so i'm more than happy now!

And you wonder why builders rip people off notsolucky, you didn't even give the UPVC guy the chance to come to a satisfactory way forward with your problem, you just stopped the full cheque and didn't even have the courtesy to tell him very very shoddy IMHO.

That said if a guy hasn't got enough money in his bank account to pay out 4 cheques and have them cashed then I personally would not deal with him
  • the reason we stopped the cheque was because when we told him of the problem he didnt sound interested and was trying to make out it must have happened after fitting (by who i dont know?)i feel bad about not letting him know as soon as i stopped the cheque and i apologised for this, more than he has done by the way!
