Help with day out in Chester

Hi all,

Me and the hubby are off to Chester zoo for our one year anniversary, and staying in a hotel on the night. I would like to surprise him with an extra day in Chester but I have no idea what's there (I'm from north east)

If any of you helpful folk know of anything value for money and fun :) We like all sorts so any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks

Chester itself is lovely to go around, theres the wall which you go up above, its a very historical city.

Near Cheshire Oaks (shopping outlet) is Blue Planet Aquarium

Oooh thanks I didn't realise it was a historical city - my favourite city is York and your two sentences made it sound similar!:) maybe we could just have a day walking around the shops and such, would you be able to recommend a nice restaurant please?

And thank you for the aquarium recommendation - i shall have a google.

    Thanks

Its not posh, but when we got to Chester, we go to one of two pubs depending which part were at.

1st - down by Argos, main road, down past BHS, Boots, - called The Queens Head (def got Queens in the name), good value pub food, great atmosphere.

2nd - on the street where you go down go past Disney shop, head as thou your going to the Cross, (big monument in the middle of the road), look down and the shops are in 2 layers (The Rows), just before you get to the Royal Bank of Scotland, theres a lovely pub there, really oldie worldie, narrow looking but it reminds me of Doc Who tardis big inside, as its over 2 floors, (never remember the name sorry!). Its quaint and again good value.

    xx

Out of the two, the 2nd one is the posher of the two pubs,

There's plenty to do in Chester so you shouldn't struggle to keep yourselves occupied for a day. In addition to the shops, bars, restaurants etc there are several museums, the cathedral, the Roman amphitheatre and lots of other attractions. You can take a guided tour of the city or a boat trip on the River Dee.

It's been a long time since I went to York but from what I remember of it if York is your favourite city you should have a great time in Chester.

  • If you only have one extra day defo dont waste your time and money going to the Blue Planet & Cheshire Oaks unless its throwing it down with rain.
Chester is a beautiful city. An absolute must to do is walk all the way round on the roman walls. Takes about an hour non stop but take your time, stop off to look at the sites like the ampitheatre and the the cathedral, take a stroll along the river, stop off for lunch or a pint somewhere. You will soon fill a morning leaving the afternoon to wander around the shops & the rows.
  • If you like York you will love Chester. I was born not far from Chester and have lived for a few years in York and the cities are extremely similar, as small historical, and just plain lovely places on a nice river.
Id recomend just wondering around, its not massive you cant get lost! and youll find some little gems of shops and sites.
For food- I always recomend a little Italian tucked away by the cathedral. My family has been eatting there for 30+ years, and its always stunning. Had better food in there than in Italy. Nice and 'posh' looking but we find we dont spend much more than would in a Pizza Hut time and the foods a LOT better. They also do a lunch menu which is an amazing offer.
It's called Sergios and is tucked down a alleyway that looks like nothing. From the Cathedral doors turn to your left, back towards the main shopping street, past the little olde worlde sweet shop and its on the bend, down the alley next to the posh glasses shop opposite The Living Room. A lovely place to celebrate without blowing the budget for the entire weekend
Hope you have a great time- I'm jeolous now!
