Young driver insurance and ncd from bike to car

My son has just passed his driving test but has been riding a bike on his own insurance for the past year. He has accrued 1 years worth of ncd so does anyone know which insurance companies will accept his ncd against a new car policy or/and/which insurers are coming out the cheapest at the moment.

I realise that this is a minefield and he has been looking for the last couple of days but any help would be great.

Many thanks

My son was in the same position - rode a bike from 17-18 and then at 18 got his first car.

Tesco insurance happily accepted his no claims from the bike insurance and were the cheapest for him by a long way (still by no means cheap though - £1800 for a 1.0 Polo)!

  • May I ask when this was as I'm sure that he contacted Tesco and they too were prohibitively expensive. The cheapest we have found so far is £2400....wow

It was last October - he passed his test in June but waited for his 18th birthday as the premiums dropped a fair bit then

  • Thanks for this, he seems to have made a million phone calls but it is still coming in at about the £2500 mark. I'm off on wednesday and will spend the day ringing around....gotta be done!
