Can't get my taps off!

My kitchen taps are old fashioned glass perspex type and they are quite manky inside....green in fact!! I can't afford to replace, but I reckon a bit of bleach would clean them up nice. However, I can't get the screws out, they won't turn with the screwdriver because it won't grip the groove. Any ideas how I can remove them?
Thanks
Thanks

These can be a real pain!
WD40 can sometimes help, but to be honest if they are old then they may get damaged when you try and remove the handle.
I tried to change the washer in one of these a few weeks back and the perspex bit came off, but there was a type of plastic lining inside of this and I had to smash it to get it off!
Your best option may be to fit new taps- Replacing taps
Or an easier option is to fit tap revivers0 -

Weekendwarrior..YAY...the WD40 worked...thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I took the plastic thing off and sprayed a load on the screw so that it was swimming in it, then I went for an hour's sleep and I just tried it and they both came off!!! Yippee. Thanks so much. Now I'm away to clean the manky green slime that's developed in between the chrome and the perspex cover.
Cheap new taps if they come clean.
Thanks everyoneShanni0 -
shanni gonna steal your thread (sorry !)
We have an old ex council house and the taps are original circa 1950, the bath taps are now dripping a buckets worth every day. my dad,who has basic plumbing knowledge, said they ont look like they can have the washer changed due to the moulded design (???) and we need the pipe work etc removing and the taps changing,
does this sound right to anyone ?
ANY advice would be great as we are in no position to afford a plumber,
TIA

shanni, you are most welcome!
mishkanorman, I have seen taps much earlier than this and you can replace the washers in them with no problems.
There are some pretty good tutorials here for taps-

Sometimes the head gear is damaged and you will then need-
