No dposit and I can't find it in any scheme?!

I've been renting a flat for 2 1/2 years and handed my keys in 10 days ago, I've not received the deposit back or heard how much the LL wants to deduct. There was a bit of damage a carpet burn and marks on the wall.
The landlord was a private landlord and the flat was his first and only rental property, I remember when i signed the agreement he said he had learnt that my deposit had to be kept in a separate account, which i was fully aware of having rented previously, anyway my agreement ended on the 21st of this month but I handed my keys in early 10 days ago, He asked if i could drop them off at work.
I have now checked the 3 schemes to find my deposit and its not showing in any of them and he hasn't said what or when I will receive and when, i did text him this week my new address stating to forward deposit but he just said thanks will be in touch shortly?

Write him a letter formally requesting your deposit in full within the next 5 days.

He has breached the law by not registering it in a scheme and can be charged up to 3 times the amount of the deposit by a judge.

However there is little point threatening him until you know what he's going to do. If he returns your deposit, fine.

If not, your only option is to take him to court.

It has to be registered in a scheme. Ask him which scheme it's registered in so you can read up on their deposit returns policy?

This not-so-subtly tells him that he messed up by not registering it, without threatening him. But G_M is right, you may need to threaten him if he starts playing up or saying he's withholding the full deposit.

Letting the LL know that you are aware that he should have scheme registered your tenancy deposit (and given you the scheme's prescribed info) and that you have checked but there is no record of it at any of the three schemes should encourage the LL to get on and return it in full, pronto.

LL has had two and a half years to get his act together and had even mentioned that he knew of his obligations

Regs have been in place for over 5 years now - time to stop p-u-s-s-yfooting {idiot MSE filter} around with errant LLs. There was plenty of publicity on the changes brought in by the Localism Act and reminders to get unregistered deposits into a scheme
