Cat D write off

Absolutely no expertise on this one from me.
My daughter has just tried to trade in her rather ancient car and been told that is a category D write off and only has a trade in value of £50.
1. Does this sound reasonable?
2. How did she manage to insure it?
3. What comeback, if any, does she have with the garage that sold it to her 18 months ago?
Thanks.

If it has some M.O.T. On it, even as a cat D, it should fetch £400-£500 on eBay.
People at the cheaper end of the market don't mind if a car has a history, as most at that end of the market will have had some work done.
And a cat D on a car that cheap could be as simple as it needing a new bumper or wing, not worth the insurance repairing, but easy and cheap for an amature mechanic to repair.
Out Astra was bought as salvage on a cat D, the previous owner bashed in one of the rear doors, and then claimed on insurance, insurance wrote it off, we bought it from a salvage auction, and found a scrapyard door in the same colour for £40.
So as you can see, cat D is nothing to worry about.
Having said that, the seller was wrong not to tell you, but a H.P.I. Check would have shown this, if you had done one.0 -

Hello Everyone...I'm after a bit of advice please...I'm looking to buy a car which is advertised as: "the vehicle is listed on category d due to previous engine problem, however new engine is fitted now"...the asking price is about 1k off the market price. Should I take my chances? Would my insurance be more expensive because of it?...thanks in advance for your help0

Unlikely a car to be written off for engine problems.
Unless it was stolen and they blew the engine up.
If you dont know what your looking at then dont touch it..
Some companies wont touch it others may insure it for a lot less than its non CAT D value.
CAT D on an older car maybe minor damage on something newer it could have been a big mess. Repaired properly or not do you have the knowledge and skill to tell?
in your case.. AVOID...Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
