If companies charged a couple of quid for supplying a No-CD patch it would still benefit them and for many consumers it could be an acceptable alternative to re-purchasing the games. I wouldn't mind paying £1.99, the price of an iPod app, for some reminiscing.

Absolutely, but the greed and shortsightedness of the gaming software industry is only matched by the greed and shortsightedness of the music industry and the greed and shortsightedness of the movie industry.

All three are trying to maintain the level of control and profit of pre-internet days. They are utterly unable to look at the revolution in production and distribution that the internet has created, and adapt to profit more than they do now. They are dinosaurs who are utterly blind to the opportunity in front of them.

The evolution of the supermarket, created by the move from customerisation to consumerism was seized on in its infancy by F W Woolworth who realised they way to profit from it was embodied in his slogan "Pile 'em high, sell 'em cheap".

When MS sell Office for $350 in the US, and then £350 in the UK (a 50% price increase), then the incentive for peopelto stick two fingers up at them and pirate it is huge, £350 is a lot of money. If they sold MS Office for £25, no one would bother pirating it, and they would make far more money.

When I was rolling software out to school,s years ago, MS STILL charged us £50 a copy per pupil machine, and we rolled out thousands of copies. Did MS need to charge us? No, they didnt. By teaching pupils MS-Office, instead of Office Star, or Open Office, we were creating future customers for them, who would likely buy there own copies. In fact, at that point MS was making one million dollars an hour profit, globally . They could have given away Office free to everyone, and the profit would not have shrunk by a single dollar. It was pure greed.

So, in terms of the internet, Gaming and software companies would be better off giving awya copies of old versions free, because then they might tempt people to buying the latest version. Music companies should give away tracks to encourage the purchase of albums.

However, Sony and MS are like a monkey whos reached through a barred cage and grabbed a banana, and cant now get his hand back through, but is too greedy to let go.

There are several ways to get round DRM and anticopy technologies, but most involve finding a patch or patched copy of the game, or a key, or a key generator, which all involve torrenting for it, and you need to have considerable defences up on the PC because such torrents are highly likely to contain malware, and some of the more nasty malware at that, so its not something for the technically illiterate to attempts.

No need for torrents if all you need is a no-cd patch, the answer is given (in bold) in post #2.

I've used the site for years & have never had a problem.

I was thinking of GTA 3 and VC. I've got those on the PS1 though.
