Yes it is expensive, though when you compare to fuel, tolls, chunnel and hotel stopover if you drove it plus wear on car etc there's probably not a lot in it...
I think Brittany are the only ones doing crossings to Spain now - we did it with someone else many years ago. It seems less people are travelling by ferry these days - many routes you could get 10 years ago no longer operate.0 -
there is also the dunkirk dover route which may be cheaper.July august may be busy in France, consider paying extra to use the toll roads. What about portsmouth to caen ferry instead.
also there are some facts and figures here

woodstoke, If you decide to use Brittany Ferries PM me and I can get you a small discount.0

Sadly P&O no longer have a crossing to Spain, the old 'Billy boat' although showing signs of age was great,
however, much depends where in Spain you intend to travel to,and 2 weeks will not leave you much time to explore very far(they are big countries) especially if you are going to travel back through France.
As said B ferries are the only company sailing to Spain and if you decide to use them then do PM 'Knighty' who is good enough to allow people to use their code(:T).
on my annual trip to Spain last year I decided to try the dover/calais/spain route to see if it was cheaper, and although I saved maybe £50ish(in a car doing 50mpg) I would never do it again after 1600 miles door to door I was boogered for the first couple of days after the driveI

We take a cool bag on board with some drinks, fruit and snacks as these are expensive on board, especially as you are travelling with children. We also take a small voltage kettle for tea and coffee in the cabin.0
