Have not been to Yellowstone but would definitely recommend Yosemite. Close to San Francisco (about 4 hours drive), Death Valley and also Kings Canyon/Sequoia NPs. Vegas is not that far away either if it interests you at all. You won't be disappointed.0 -
We have been to Yosemite 3 times now and LOVE it! We are off to Yellowstone next week for the first time, so can't really comment yet. The reason we have put off visiting Yellowstone before is that it's not that easy to access as Yosemite. Our first trip to Yosemite, we flew to LA, drove north to Yosemite via Sequoia NP, then on to San Fransisco and then back down the Pacific Coast highway. We have also combined it with Las Vegas. If you want to stay in the parks themself you usually have to book well in advance, our accommodation for Yellowstone was booked almost 12 months ago!0

Thanks Sues, be great to know how you go in Yelowstone compared to Yosemite. Enjoy.0

I have been to both parks and for just the park, I would recommend Yellowstone, I would go back there in a minute especially in September when the colours will be spectacular and the wildlife at its peak as well.
But
Yosemite is also good for wildlife and autumn colours and it has more connectivity with other sights to see in the same area as well as cities nearby.
I have been to Yosemite in both high summer and deep mid-winter and the beauty took my breath away both times.
My only trip to Yellowstone was in November and although some of the roads were closed due to heavy snow falls and the temp hit -14C during my time there, I loved every minute and my camera never stopped. I even got Old Faithfull all to myself one morning

Yes I'd agree, Yellowstone for the park itself and Yosemite if you want to see other things in the area.0
