    Nope, the vast majority are still operating today ... there are currently 47 building societies in the UK.

    Joe_Bloggs, thanks for that but I managed to persuade them to freeze charges so what I pay in reduces the o/d which is on a £14 month reducing balance. Have to ring them on Monday to try and get the agreement to continue, will offer £5 as it's all I can afford at the moment.
