Where to find people to answer my market research survey???

Options
It is all in the title really!

I would like to start a business selling nightwear to a niche market.
Ive done a free survey on survey monkey (although i think i might upgarde to the paying version if i want to be able to download the results and manipulate them to)

Ive publicise my survey on mumsnet and got some answer but I need more!! (can I do this as well on mse forum?) Im stuck for ideas...
Do you know where can I find for free or cheap people who would like to answer my survey? (women in particular)

Many thanks

You can put shout outs on facebook and Twitter, and you can set (fairly basic) multiple choice posts on Facebook groups.

Just bear in mind that wherever you post you are unlikely to get a random and representative sample of the general population, this could really skew your results.

Personally I'd be trying to do face to face surveys as you'll get far more useful feedback. Can you do street surveys (with council permission) and work with parenting groups such as NCT etc? It'll take more effort but I'd much rather base a business plan on some proper legwork than a free survey posted up on survey monkey.

    Thanks Paul,
I think I might just do that.. Then again if you take the NCT, it is hardly representative of the population.... (white middle-Class women between 28 and 35) and it will be geographically biased too as I will only ne able to survey my area!
Survey monkey does offer to provide you. With people you are interested in... But it is a paying service...
I know I should invest in market research but I don't want to get it wrong.

I had about 40 answers on my free survey monkey and it has been very interesting, in fact it was a good trial run for my survey and I need to change some questions to make it more relevant to my business.
    Thank you

I have also posted the link under my profile if someone is interested :-) thank you!!!

This is a rather worrying start to your new venture.

You say you "would like to start a business selling nightwear to a niche market." yet you don't appear to know where that niche market is or presumably if it even exists?

If you do, then that is surely who you should be aiming the questionaire at?

Ooh... thanks Savvy_Sue. I hadn't spotted that particular rule before as it's hidden within a section that starts "I'm a journalist..." but it appears the prohibition does indeed relate to every user.

I've a feeling I could be in regular contact with the Forum Team from now on

My thoughts exactly. Sounds to me like you need to do some more thinking before you get to the point of doing market research.

  • Best place to start is what is the niche. Forget the general population because you aren't interested in the general population. Let's get this targeted and effective.

Women is not a niche it's a target market and a very wide one at that. Even 'mum's' is not a niche. Are you going for mums? if not then mumsnet isn't the right place to go, if you are then you have to dig deep and pinpoint the right type of mum in order to get in front of her.

Nightwear is something that is for her rather than her child and to do with how she looks and feels which means you have to over-come two pretty big barriers if you are targeting the average mum.

    1. Most of us will put our children first and go without treating ourselves
    2. A lot of us don't feel great about our bodies

There are plenty out there who don't feel that way. They are your low hanging fruit. For the rest you need to be aware of these two big objections and work with them to provide a worthwhile solution.

Reading the responses that are posted it shows a lot of common sence that it is so easy to over look. The abilityto get caught up in our own thoughts and miss the obvious is out there to trip up all of us
