Fed up this year

I'm very fed up this year with my garden.
I have sown 3 lots of each, Peas, Runner beans and french beans in pots in the greenhouse, Ive also put seeds directly into the garden and I think Iv'e got about 12 plants from that lot.
My garlic is a waste of time, it has the bulblets but not the outer skin wrapping around and its very small,
Slugs are eating my strawberries before I can get to them. Ruhbarb is doing great though. Leeks look ok at the moment
Think I'm just going to give up this year now and try again next year

Don't give up.... This is the first year that I am trying tomatoes outside (I have them in the greenhouse as well) and since I have planted them outside (after hardening them off) it has been so cold... 5 days ago, it felt like November and last night, I was sorely tempted to turn the heating on...
With regards to your garlic, I usually plant some that were meant for the kitchen but the first year is always poor... You should then use the garlic bulb you have grown and plant the cloves of that the following year.... That way, you are getting the garlic aclimatised to your garden... and the garlic bulb improves in size each year...
I don't know where you live, but the weather has been horrendous this year... We had fine weather in April and then apart from a week or so, it has been cold and wet ever since... Why don't you grow more beans? The soil will be a lot warmer now (except in my garden) and then you will have a succession of beans... until the first frosts at the back end...
I hope this helps....0 -
Hi Harry's Nan, Don't worry, you're not the only one. I've tried growing veg for the first time this year. Lots of growth on the potatoes in containers so will just have to wait and see, but spent weeks moving carrots in and out then gave up and they are sprouting a few leaves now...
If it's any consolation, the rhubarb that I planted hasn't even surfaced and they told me that was easy! It has to get better....:grouphug::)The beautiful thing about learning is nobody can take it away from you.
Thanks to everyone who contributes to this wonderful forum. I'm very grateful for the guidance and friendliness that I always receive from you.

You are not alone, i grow lots of veg and flowers including tropicals every year and this year very little is moving. Not seen the like in my lifetime its all very strange. Unless we get a late summer i doubt much is recoverable.
I hope next year is better.0 -

I bought a mature rhubarb as well as 2 'seeds' which were all planted at the same time back in February or March. I began to lose all hope that the seeds would develop but one of them popped its head above ground about 2 weeks ago so it looks as if they just need some time or a bit of warmth.0 -
Its a bit soul destroying when after all the hard work and expense that everything flops, Ive never had such a bad year as this one, I only hope next year will be better.
I feel a bit better now I've had a moan, (will not feel sorry for myself anymore)Treat other's how you like to be treated.

I planted some seeds direct in garden 2 1/2 months ago the type you sow and light cover of soil they wild flowers. None germinated. Courgettes none germinated, managed to get some spares of someone. Carrots are very poor show. Runner beans to are very small as are outside toms haven't grown much since I got them 3 weeks back there about 18" high0

I usually try to be cheerful, so not exactly moaning but nice to know that you're not alone isn't it?
Oh, and I'll not give up on the rhubarb yet then. Thanks for sharing that

We've had allotments for about 10 years and many of the plotholders are growers of many decades. We have all had failures this year

My early peas either didn't germinate or just rotted off.
The slugs must have spent the winter in bed 'cos they have multiplied x100
The birds ravaged the cabbages, most of what survived got rootfly.
That said we've just picked loads -I mean loads of strawbs. Many were slug damaged or mushy but we still came home with 6 huge punnets (the size you get peaches in) Our neighbours love us at this time of year.
Lettuce are doing well 'tho strugggling to germinate the seed.
And our early potatoes are fab.
So it's swings and roundabouts,'tho a little worse this year.0 -
We grew bits in our yard last year and did well, got an allotment this year worked it over and planted only about 40% of the carrots have germinated although parsnips doing well seen as never done them before, rhubarb has been amazing but is most definitely not happy at the min with all the wind
peas are providing but are not very tall. I've had loads of strawbs and all my cabbage brocolli cauli are growing all be it at a mega slow rate! I put some seeds in a couple weeks ago for lettuce etc and they have all germinated it's just not good to put them out at present I NEED SOME SUNSHINE 0 -

I bought some rhubarb plants that were tiny last year. I know you are not meant to, but i have picked Lbs and Lbs worth already. I keep chickens and each time i muck out their run I chuck loads of it on the 'barb.
Can you get hold of any manure or well rotted compost?Mortgage free as of 10/02/2015. Every brick and blade of grass belongs to meeeee. :j0
