Camping - What do I need?

Obviously a tent! We're going to get one this weekend. I know we need airbeds, sleeping bags, a cooker etc! Is there somewhere I can find a list of the basics? We're going to start doing weekends at first, then looking to do a weeks holiday next year.

Like the check-list, that's a very good idea. However, I'd take decent cutlery, not plastic and at the very least a chopping board and sharp knife.

What you need is a ferry ticket - and be prepared to drive till you find some sunshine. Camping is FABULOUS in the warmth and dry. It's not even too bad in the chill of a British spring or autumn, if you can pick a sunny weekend. in a gale, persistent rain, or even jusy damp grey day after damp grey day, it quickly loses its thrill. It took me 10 years to work out that it might be more fun in France!

I went camping for the 1st time in August 2010 and it wasn't great weather, but not as bad as it is now. We roughed it a bit, but I loved it! Can't wait to get started :D

Quite fancy jumping on the ferry next year, want to do a few weekends locally first to get to grips with it all. I've got the Yorkshire Dales and the Peak District on my doorstep and I plan to take a look!

  • Hi,
I absolutely love camping and have been camping with the extended family ever since I can remember. However, it isn't for everyone and it just may be worth seeing what you can borrow 1st time round. I remember my first camping trip with my dad, in which the weather was so bad, when we woke up the rest of the camp site had left. My dad got rid of all the equipment, he had bought specially and he never camped again!

    Also work checking freecycle/freegle etc.

Failing that hope this list helps
    • Tent- this is a big outlay for a good one, so see if you can find one where they are already erected.
    • Gas stove - dependent on no's to cook for, you could consider one burner.
    • Airbed/sleeping mats - if you put something like a blanker under the lilo or sleeping mat it helps keep you warm.
    • Cutlery - I agree that metal is better than plastic we got ours from the pound shop.
    • Bedding - this doesn't have to be sleeping bags they are often warmer but if you take your duvet and additional covers you can snuggle.
    • Saucepans - we tend to relegate our old knackered ones for camping/caravaning but may just splash out on a budget set - the sets for sale at 'proper' camping stores seem to be more expensive
    • Plastic crockery
    • Gas bottle.
    • Matches
    • Cool box and freezer blocks
    • Utensils - tin opener etc Colender etc
    • Camping chairs
    • Camping kitchen - not essential but really saves the knees when cooking.
    • Table and chairs
    • Torches (to go to the loo in the night)
    • Lamps for when you are sitting up drinking wine
    • Mallet
    • wellies (handy hint put them upside down on a stick in the ground that way you can leave them out of the tent. Gaining prescious space and avoiding creepy crawlies) Also don't forget the bug spray/citronella candles etc
    • washing up bowl, cloths and liquid
As to where to buy, for camping envy we love Towsure although most of our specific camping items came from Millets. A friend went to a camping show where all the tents are out on display, they got a gorgeous tent and for a very reasonable price.

My first ever post is also the longest ever post! Have a fantastic time.
