Unexpected noises from laptop

I'm running Vista Home Premium Version 6 (Build 6002: Service Pack 2). Whenever I connect anything to a USB socket it gives a "Device Connect" sound and a corresponding "Device Disconnect" when it's unplugged.
Over the last day or two it's been making the sounds randomly when I'm browsing and nothing is connected to any port.
Any ideas what could cause this?

Do you mean sounds over its speaker or hardware "clicky" noises?
If its the latter, it could be that your hard disc is not long for this world so taking a backup ASAP would be a sensible precaution.0 -

Your laptop thinks you are connecting something.
Do you have an external keyboard / mouse or anything else?
There is a record kept in Windows of what has been connected;

Nothing external near it at all. The USB Device Viewer is handy and shows some strange results eg my phone has been plugged in today according to the viewer, only I know it hasn't. Later on was a USB Video Device and again nothing has been connected.Your laptop thinks you are connecting something.

Some good suggestions. I'll work through them.0 -
The noises are over the speaker, and the names I have given them above are the Windows names for them if I access Sounds through the Control Panel.
It could be a faulty socket. I've had similar system noises from a laptop that had a thwack on a plugged-in USB socket.
Eventually stopped it by shoving a lump of blu tac into the offending socket and taping over it. Did till I replaced the laptop.0 -

Yes. If you have a webcam that is a USB device, likewise bluetooth adapter and on some laptops, the wifi. They are USB devices but connect to a header on the laptop mainboard however they are seen as USBno different to what you plug into the external USB port and treated the same. A dodgy cable to say the webcam would have windows picking it up as a usb device being connected and disconnected.0
