Replacing a tank fed cold water pipe
ReflexReaction
I have a old, iron, cold water pipe running from my airing cupboard, through one of the bedrooms, and into the bathroom. It supplies the bath, sink and toilet.
However, iron fragments come out of it, along with water. The water tank supplying it is plastic and thus I assume it must be this old iron pipe.
I want to replace this pipe with a modern plastic one, but don't know where to start. I've done some central heating work before, replacing thermostatic valves on radiators and also shifted a few hot water pipes for a central heating system. I am a confident DIY'er and would rather not pay a plumber £50 for the pleasure of connecting two ends of a pipe up (alas it may still come to this!).
Does anyone have any resources that cover what I need to do here? The old iron pipe is about 50% "fatter" than the standard iron central heating pipe, and I suspect the connections from the pipe to the iron pipe down from the tank are going to be old and non-standard (just a guess!).
The house was built in 1955 if it helps
Thanks in advance,

Sounds fairly straight forward.
You need to turn the water off at the mains, this will stop the tank filling up.
Then open the cold water taps in the bathroom, this will drain down the tank.
Then remove the iron pipe and replace with new 22mm push fit plastic pipe.
If you are not too confident then start early on a sat morning, if you need any adaptorts for the new plastic pipe to fit the tank then most good plumbers merchants are open until 12 on a sat morning, so they should be able to get you the correct parts. It then gives you the rest of the day to get things connected up and running. You may click thanks if you found my advice useful0 -
If the water supply to the tank only supplies water to the bathroom, why not drain the tank completely, then divert the water that fills that tank (mains water) straight to the bathroom with new plastic pipe?
Obvoiusly you have not posted any other details, but this would negate the use of storing cold water when fresh mains water could be supplied directly. I do lots of this type of conversion in my line of work. Drinkable water in the bathroom can be a real plus in the middle of a hot night (if we ever get any again - lol).
Good luck.0
