QT I often lie in bed(not due to depression)but because you can read in bed, listen to a radio, use the laptop etc...it's warm.

Of course I get up and do things, as anyone would. I have a friend in London who wears a warm clothes around the home but still often goes to bed to relax and stay warm esecially in Winter.

You are right about getting out of a nice warm bed and the house being cold. It was very bad here after I lost Mum in April as up until then this house was always heated and lovely and warm.

Don't know if it was that cold or it took some getting used to, hate to think what this winter will be like...I doubt I could use less gas or electric than I do now. And it is as little as possible.

Back to the topic(though it's all connected to why I/we have store rooms)

Tinks what you found is so important, its no use having lots of food in your store cupboard but none of it is what you like. You should only ever buy what you and your family will eat.

It was my DH's idea for us to start a store cupboard (he's very keen on survival programmes and websites etc, especially the American ones). I had to put my foot down though when he insisted on putting stuff in the shopping trolley that we have never eaten before and won't be eating in the future just because it fitted his idea of SHTF type food. I'd like to get more in our store cupboard, but there's no space at the moment - need to do some serious chucking out of rubbish and jiggling stuff round.

I guess ordering from AF would be too much for me so I'll just have to keep building up my stores as I am...

Pops elec blankets are great for cold nights - we are hunting for a new one as we got rid of ours earlier this year as wires were starting to come through (it was one of the old style ones I refused to get a new one till I had to) but were very cheap to run and great on freezing nights (and days)

Added to my stores today got some tea bags on offer - got the m*rror today as there is a voucher in for £5 off a £35 spend in ald* so will get tins and dried stuff using this.

tink debenhams do really cheap elec blankets after xmas ofcourse thats not much use to you right now but if you havnet got one by the it's worth looking, also keep an eye on tesco direct earlier in the year they had single ones for £1.80 (gutted i missed that), and my local fire station checks them every year for free to make sure all the wires are ok so could be worth checking locally.

pops are you sure you can give money to friends? i know for normal deprivation of capital rules you can give small amounts however if you've never given any before and they do feel you did it only to enable you to claim benefits they might sanction you.
You could do a big af order when your mums savings come in, just remeber whne your money does come in they don't acually expect you to live off next to nothing so spend as much as you can as quickly as you can even if it's just put extra in the gas and buy extra food, a good indication is £70 a week for none housing costs as thats how much jobseekers is, the quicker you can get your savings down the quicker you can reapply (hoepfully before the eligabilty changes)

CAB says I don't have to put in for the probate asap so I can continue as I am(better for me)for now and am helped but I am buying what I think I need and has to last me for years and saving a little. Then as you say when I do come into Mum's money I'll make certain I feed myself well and use the gas and electric, even if it gets tougher later I'd rather it was spent on me.

Paying full rent/CT, utility bills, food...it ain't going to last long...Even if there were smaller properties to move into...example I was given it would only make a difference of £10 per week(ok over a year that's a tidy sum)and you may save the cost of one room regarding bedroom tax but if you are moved to another area location you may pay that in bus and taxi fares etc...to get around so be no better off and out of the area you know.

But the smaller properties are few anyhow. And i certainly don't want to move to another town...

lol i havent checked in ages, i just checked now tho after typing that.

pops i'm sure you'll manage one way or another :) you're just right to send it on yourself no point saving it only to make yourself worse off, i'm dreading universal credits as i do think it's punishing the savers out there (like me who get tax credit and wants to build my own house without a mortgage-why should i pay the bank nearly double what my house is worth? but will end up stagnant in my savings once i reach £16k)

If I take the savings I have to go right down to £8,000 or less to be in a similar situation as I am now, actually making myself poorer and in this day and age £16,000 is not a lot for anyone claiming benefits or working and not claiming and this could be something to fall back on in emergencies(repair or replacing things, eating better food or having a warmer house a bit longer(the threshold should be raised)It's too low. Even £20,000 would be better. And more in tune with the situation we are all in.

If I don't spend Mum's money on daily living costs, it will still reduce and I won't have had any use of it. It will still dwindle. So I'll be poor whatever happens...

    Great life ahead.

I wouldn't care I don't want much, just enough to eat, warmth, a roof over my head and a little bit of pleasure(the radio and internet is enough for me)and the same for most.

I rarely drink, I don't smoke but I am obssesed with switching everything off or not using say the CH.

It is very much a case of climbing into bed or wearing cheap jumpers from the charity shop to keep warm. I doubt a holiday is likely though it would probably do me good. If its like this now, what's coming if I reach pensionable age(and that's not that far away...)

Hopefully, I'll manage and everything will work out better than I fear...lots of unknowns and mis information in the media...often no information...
