Trip meter help please, floppy switch

hello all
Since you have managed to help me in the past with pc bits I thought I'd ask if anyone knows about trip meters. Our garage lights have their own switch on the trip meter and if anything goes wrong anywhere else in he house they will work regardless. Yesterday the lights were put on by my mum while visiting and can't remember which light blew (inset lights). She just remembers seeing a flash and all lights went. My dad tried to put the switch back up and it wouldn't go so rather than force it he left it. A few hours later I tried and the switch is just floppy, it goes up with no resistance and falls back down again. What has happened and what can I do? I don't really have the money for someone to come and look at it unless I really have to.
Thanks in advance for any ideas

Trip meter???????????
Do you mean 'consumer unit'? I suggest you try setting the switch that your mum tried to OFF and try the circuit breaker back in again, although it is possible that the circuit breaker is now broken. Or was it the RCD?Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -
Trip meter? Isn't that what taxi drivers have in their vehicles?Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0

Usually after tripping, the RCD switch needs to be "switched off" completely and then back on.
ie if the switch has tripped to the center position, it needs to be switched to the down position and then back up to switch on.0 -
Ok - I should also have said in your other thread:
Change the subject line!
No electrician will have a clue what a trip meter is (I actually thought you were referring to a car odometer initially from the subject line...).
I think you have to go to Advanced mode, and you should then be able to edit the thread title.0
