Are there still vacancies? Where do I apply? What is the closing date?

    Call this number
    Phone: 01752 725572 -
    (Head Office Switchboard/Business enquiries)

On Monday and tell them you want to speak to the recruitment manager for the new store in Merseyside. Tell them you want to apply what's the process. Also be sure to read up on the company here:
    therange.co.uk/fcp/content/about_us/content

Also there's an application form here:
    therange.co.uk/fcp/content/careers/content

It says if you fill it out, they'll add it to their database

(you need to add http-www etc... to the above as I can't post links)

    Good luck! :)

Another idea popped into my head today. Asda have bought some land on Clock Face Road and will be building a new store there. The land is currently occupied by a hand car wash, a row of shops, small gym, and car park. There is also an old Kwik Save building that has been empty for several years.

I understand that the planning permission has gone through, although there is no sign of redevelopment yet (I don't know if maybe they have to let the leases on the buildings run for longer for any reason, or if there is anything else).

Anyway, Asda are opening a store there, I'm just not sure when. There will be up to 50 jobs available. It might be worth contacting Asda as well, to let them know you are interested. After all, you would need some training before the store opens and it shows you are keen.

Tesco have recently opened a new superstore in Widnes, but most jobs have probably been filled by now. Might be worth checking though.

The local paper is the St. Helens Star (don't bother with the Reporter - they often don't advertise any jobs at all). This week there are 1.5 pages of jobs - not many, I agree, but some. They include cover supervisor in a school, a few teaching assistant jobs, housekeeper in the hospice, call centre staff, admin, technicians (different types, all for TPSCo in Runcorn), HGV drivers, library managers for schools, and the usual agencies and catalogue delivery jobs.

You've probably already done this, but also check out council websites. St Helens is https://www.sthelens.gov.uk

Depending on your transport situation and where you live, is it worth looking at parts of North Cheshire (Widnes, Warrington, Runcorn) or South Lancashire or even the western side of Greater Manchester? You could also put different town names into the Job Centre website to see if it throws up anything different.

What sort of work do you want to do?

The Range announced last week ..........
I've seen an advert in Morrisons ...........
Asda have bought some land on Clock Face..........
Tesco have recently opened a new superstore in Widnes......

Napoleon was right - we are just a nation of shopkeepers!

I suspect that the jobs on offer in these stores will be part time - where I suspect that many of the applicants will have lost well paid full time jobs and will reluctantly take such a position to keep a roof over their heads.

Are these the jobs that 'call me Dave' referred to when he suggested the private sector will take up the slack after all the cuts in the public sector?

In all seriousness have you considered moving? Obviously if you have kids it's probably a redundant option but,

Cheapest flights to Munich will probably be about £30, two weeks in a hostel £280 plus food which you'd be buying here anyway.

Hit every bar, kitchen, factory, agency for two weeks and you'll probably find something, about a million Poles have done it here in the last few years.

Wouldn't you need to speak German to a reasonable standard?

    Probably not.

I can't say for sure, I've actually never been to Germany but everyone I've ever met on holiday and at university from Germany, Holland and Scandinavia all speak perfect English. It really is a high standard, the accent and slang/colloquialism slows the conversation slightly and I think that the standard of English is only that high for those who have been in educated in the past 15-20 years.

Anyone older than this will still speak good enough English to get by unless you head for very rural areas but if they've gone out of their way to learn English it will be to the same high standard as the younger generation.

To give you an idea one of Italy's top universities will be teaching in English soon... http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-17958520
Many other universities on the continent already teach in English, it's meant cities have very much become bilingual. People struggle enough at university but could you imagine being taught and submitting exams and essays in a foreign language? It gives an idea as to the level of fluency they have.

Even ignoring that, a lot of factory work, cleaning and labour probably doesn't require any German at all (it would be polite though to learn basic conversational German). To give an example, all 8 cleaners where I work are Polish and only two speak any English.
