help and advice needed for a new hot water cylinder

I live in London. My current hot water tank is about 10-15 years old and started to have overheating problems in the past week. I had a plumber who came out to have a look and he has suggested to either replace it with a new stats or installing a new hot water cylinder. He recommended the later as he said in the long run it saves me money.

The cylinder is pretty ancient, so might be time for it to be replaced anyway, but thought I'd double check with you experts out here! :)

He quoted me Ariston hot water cylinder, unvented, 210 Ltr at a cost of £1300 including labour. He's said it's going to take him a full day to do the job.

So, does this cost sound about right? Or, should I get the cylinder and ask him for installation costs only?

Help please!!!

Many thanks.

Get a second opinion from a plumber recommended to you by a source you trust. Out of interest..which Ariston unvented cylidner has been quoted?

If your unvented cylinder is replaced make sure whoever does the work has his/her G3 (i.e. Unvented Water Systems Certificate of Competence..in my OH's case, this is listed on the reverse side of his Gas safe register Photo ID as 'Unvented Cyl').

  • Thanks, Canucklehead.

He is recommended by a friend. Another plumber has quoted £1500 + vat.

I believe the cylinder he recommended is Ariston aquabravo 210 unvented.

Hi: not a fan of Ariston UVCs tbh. My OH fits Oso or Heatrae Sadia products. What cylinder is the other plumber quoting? Also need to consider the controls if they are being replaced.

  • Is Ariston UVC not reliable? He did mentioned Oso but I thought Ariston has a better reputation, is it not?

The other plumber didn't even bother telling me the brands and he was asking for £1800 all in.

What additional of controls would I need? My electricity is on economy 7 so I won't need a timer I'd think.
