please help!! locked out of hotmail,going round&round in circles!!

Hi there clever folks
Hoping you can help as am starting considering banging head on a proverbial wall!
I have been locked out of my hotmail account. It seems to be because I sent a message to everyone in my address book, something I don't do very often and hotmail have flagged it as potentially fraudulent behaviour, and have blocked it.
They are trying to send me a recovery code to an old email address that I had over 10 years ago and no longer exists.
I have followed advice from the windows forum and get as far as entering an alternative email address but then the next screen that comes up is an error message asking me to try again but the same keeps happening.
I can't email the forum as it asks me to log in, and I can't! that's the problem!
I've rung a couple of these free phone "we'll recover your account" numbers, but they cost over £100! couldn't believe it.
there must be a simple, and cheaper, way to do it!
Does anyone have any suggestions or remedies?
Feel as though this should be an easy thing to sort out. frustrated is not the word!!

What exactly does the error message say?

Set up another hotmail account so you can get access to the forums

Set up a new Yahoo or gmail account for confirmation e-mails.

The same thing happened to me a fortnight ago. I thought I was up doo-doo creek because my backup e-mail got blocked years ago for the same reason.

I used this link and followed the advice. I managed to get to a page where it asks you to fill in details about your account so they know it's you trying to gain access and not a hacker. You'll need details such as e-mails you've recently sent, any custom folders you've made and the answer to your security question. You shouldn't need your backup e-mail at any point.

The backup e-mail thing is so daft because I'm trying to change mine to my Gmail, but it keeps sending e-mails to the old blocked account to confirm that I want to change it to the Gmail account.

Thanks all for responses. Chewynut, that was the link I was following again and again and getting nowhere. I've tried it again and it now seems to work! We have re-entry! So thanks again. Maybe hotmail.com didn't like the title of my mass email.... "I am changing my address to gmail!"
Anyway glad to be back in again, and not paying £100 to some shyster!! Thanks again all

Take this as the internet's way of telling you that you need to move to a decent email provider and have nothing more to do with Hotmail again!
