Cancelling car insurance

I've been told that I need to pay £50 to my insurer for cancelling the insurance on a car I have sold. With only 6 weeks left to what would have been the renewal date I think this is excessive. What are the legal implications if I choose not to cancel? Incidentally, I paid the insurance up front in a lump sum, and the car has been sold to a dealer.

The only problem could be if the new owner doesn't insure the car.

Then if it is stolen and involved in a claim, your policy could be used to claim against.

But if you already told your insurer you sold it, they might insist you cancel the policy.

op said "not to cancel", not "not to pay". If the insurance isn't cancelled, and left to run to the end, the car will still be on risk on your policy. Your insurer may force you to cancel though.

I have explained the risk correctly! Nothing to do with "not to pay"!

Deleted my response, and apologies to Quentin, as he says, nothing to do with his post. Maybe we should delete these three posts later as well.
