How long can a company keep my card details on file and how long can they delay charg

Options
Hi,

I ordered some building materials over the phone by credit card and they were delivered within a week.

I have today recieved a receipt for them stating that payment was taken yesterday (well over a month after delivery).

I'm a little concerned that they have held onto my card details for this long, can they do this and can they delay charging?

I hadn't realised they hadn't taken the money as my card statements are paid automatically and I haven't checked last months (bad I know, I usually check each month).

Is there a limit on how long they can do this for? I'm a bit concerened that if I have/ever miss anything else I might get a nasty shock in 12 months time for example.

Thanks in advance for your help.
I have a lot of problems with my neighbours, they hammer and bang on the walls sometimes until 2 or 3 in the morning - some nights I can hardly hear myself drilling ;)

I think its more like 6 months from the transaction date to take a payment from your card (unless its a CPA), even if you close your account during that time (the payment will still be taken).

But they can send you an invoice and demand payment upto 6 years afterwards.

if they authorise the card they have to claim payment within a smaller timeframe yes but there's nothing stopping them from charging the card with a fresh transaction at a later date if they never completed the original transaction. Perfectly above board.
