Holiday ideas

Me and the gf are looking for holiday ideas for next year. We're up for pretty much anything so narrowing it down to somewhere specific is a bit of a mission. From all inclusive package trips to DIY trips to somewhere vague.

Our very rough criteria is as follows:
- Less than 2k all in for the both of us. That doesn't mean we want to spend all of it. We'd be happy to fly Ryanir and get a hostel somewhere if it was somewhere we liked the look of.
- Flight time of less than ~12 hours - purely to keep the cost down
- Not somewhere you'd go for a short weekend break (e.g. Barcelona, Paris, Rome, New York etc)
- 1 week minimum

Any recommendations?

What do you want, hot or cold, beaches, culture, scenery, activities, quiet or buzzing, one place or on the move, touristy or off the beaten track....

Drive to the Lakes, find a field and lay down in the middle of it.

No planes, airports, transfers, hotels, scams, money or hassle.

Just you and her in a field and not a care in the world.

That's the problem, we're open to any of these options. Although I've just thought of two things we don't want:
    - To stay in a big hotel complex with hundreds of other people
    - To got a typical 'lads holiday' destination

I realise being stupidly open makes it difficult to pick a place, hence why I'm asking you folk for you favourite destinations!

I was hoping to be debt free this summer in time for a kickass holiday with my partner (first one in 3 years together!) but sadly every weekend since March has involved best friend's hen do/ weddings or 30th birthdays!

Anyway, when daydreaming, I came across this place. Completely secluded yet totally accessible to all amenities. I WISH:

Never been to this part of Greece but have done a village where my friend's mum grew up (not touristy at all) and loved Greece.

Although, by next year, hopefully I'll be able to afford this place too!

If not, how about Sardinia? Supposed to be beautiful (can you tell I'm a coastal girl by birth!)...

Or a french villa/ boutique B&B where you can drive to different places during the day and then relax with good food and wine in the local town in the evening?

OR, just under 12 cut off, why not do a fly and drive from San Fran down to Vegas or something? Can mix OTT vegas with the stunning Yosemite Park.

Just a couple on my wish list :-)

    Thanks Kaz.

Sardinia looks nice, will definitely look into that.
Not massively intersted in France as we go there every year as my gf's parents have a house there.
And we've been to San Fran before. Didn't go to Yosemite though which I would have liked to. No interest in Vegas either.

I was going to suggest a road trip round the western US. Yosemite, death valley (it's stunning, seriously!), various ghost towns, or possibly Bryce Canyon, Grand Canyon, the Utah/Arizona national parks etc.

Not the whole lot mind, it'd take a month at least! If going off-peak no need to book anything except in the national parks and maybe just the first/last night, just stay in motels on route and always haggle the price!

How about travelling down through Bosnia, Croatia and Montenegro for a week or two? You could go to places like Sarajevo and Mostar with great historical significance, Dubrovnik with its beauty and expensive restaurants, Budva with its beaches. Maybe even end up in Albania? Basically a real mix of a holiday.

Another suggestion is Iceland. You have Rekjavik which is beautiful and lively, with lots of fun things to do such as whale watching and the blue lagoon etc, and you could see some more of the country, visit some geysers and waterfalls etc

Another idea is the transiberian express as something really different. I guess that either sounds fun or awful!
